quiet return pump recommendations

Is there a smaller laguna maxflow model in terms of size and power so I can use 2 for returns ?

there are quite a few actually. there is the laguna powerjet series also, which is almost identical... except that i'm not sure if they're smaller in size/power, i assume power at least.

what size is your tank?

My DT is 140g and the sump pump compartment ID is only 13.5" X 5".
It'll be great to find 2 quiet pumps that can fit in there.

I would imagine if you setup a single 1500 or so, you would be fine in splitting it to two returns. it would probably cut down on noise also... I personally think it's never too bad to have too much flow/gph since you can always put a gate valve on it.

Running the jebao for the last 6 months with no issues. I took it apart to clean it the other day and was shocked with how high quality the parts were.

A quick update.
I can't resist not buying 2 new eheim 1260 for $230 hoping that they'll fit. They were slightly too long and only one can fit in the return pump compartment. So I sectioned an area for the 2nd pump in the main compartment. They're so much quieter than the sicce 3.0 now they make the wp60 and the skimmer sound noisy. I'm happy with the overall noise level and spend money on corals instead.;)

Does the annoying sound/hum go away when you lift your return pump, or skimmer+pump, or any other pump off the bottom of your sump?

My experience w/the Jebao isn't as great. The tank would be practically dead silent it weren't for the jebao. When I spoke with Eric (Jebao support), he stated that back pressure could cause noise w/the impeller. He said to replace any 90 degree elbows with 45's and use a mat under the pump. So I increased the flow from the 1st setting to the 3rd and adjusted the Herbie drain pipe accordingly. All my elbows are 45 degrees so that was already fine. That helped somewhat but it's still noisy. The pump is sitting on a sponge but it's directly threaded onto 1" PVC for the return and also split to feed the fuge. You can hear it in this 4s vid https://youtu.be/hZH86XNAjQg
For some reason, the noise is louder in the video than in person but that could be b/c the phone was 2 feet from the pump when recording that vid. Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking of getting the octopus b/c that seems to get great reviews.

I have a diablo 3500 on my 40 breeder with the lowest setting and its super quiet!! you cant hear anything at night time

+1 on the Vertex V6, powerful, aesthetic, and super quiet. I can't even tell when it turns on after shutting all pumps off for feeding.

i'm using laguna powerjets, including a new powerful one.

super duper quiet. the newer ones are quieter than the old ones for some reason. great click-fits and easily cleaned.

i also like how the screws are plastic, and don't fall out when you need to clean them.

Yeah--that's your problem. You should never have hard pvc plumbed straight into a pump because the pipes will vibrate. Instead, use some soft vinyl tubing or flex PVC for at least 6" before transferring back to hard pvc. This damps the vibration and keeps things quiet.

My Jebao DCT-8000 is nearly silent on full power.

BRS sells silicone tubing that works really well for this.

my pump is connected to a few fittings then directly into a union and up through flexpvc

i don't have an issue with vibration. maybe it's the flex pvc

I recently installed a eheim 1260 and am surprised how loud the hum is. I have rubber mats under it along with silicon tubing to break up the PVC pipe but even if I lift it off the sump bottom it still hums. If it were anywhere other than my family room I wouldn't care so much but its annoying me.

I wish vertex made a smaller pump than the V6, that is just way more flow than I need. Any suggestions?

So have you totally isolated the fact that it's the pump, and nothing resonating that it's attached to (including tubing)? If so I can't offer any suggestions, since a noisy pump is a noisy pump, unless the impeller is not set properly or manufacturer defective (warped, etc). You may consider taking the pump apart and see if you can quiet it down with a rebuild.

I'm assuming this is a new pump. If not an obvious suggestion is same. Take it apart and see if impeller or pump inside is calcified, thus needing a good overnight vinegar soak to de-calcify it.

If it doesn't hum when running alone (ie not attached to anything), thus caused by your tubing or sump you may have to play around with placement to avoid a sweet humming spot like I had. Things attached acted like a resonance sound box), and I eventually just gave up on glass sump, and went with a Rubbermaid. Silenced everything.

But before I converted to a soft Rubbermaid. I did manage to stumble on a silencing technique. My sump was the problem. Once day I was doing maintenance on the tank and placed something heavy (A small piece of plywood with a 2 Gal Bucket of water) on top of one corner of my Glass sump. To my surprise hum drop like 70%. That kept me happy till I went with a Rubbermaid with sound down 90%
