Sorry to thread jack but,
Whats considered a major alk swing? I have to dose 115ml of alk every night. From 8.6 to 9.3 using sodium bicarbonate (brs brand). Is this to much of a swing? My cap seems to be bleaching a little.
It was shaded under a rock somewhat but i moved it out in the light but almost half way up. Here is what it looked like when i fisrt got it..
Talk about a hijack.
I haven't ever seen to much flow on a monti cap. I had some that were as wide as my tank so there is no way it was not getting direct flow somewhere.
I would agree. The Monti caps I have prefer flow, and I think it actually helps with the "fanning" of the individual plates. Plus, it helps to bring a constant supply of water and associated trace elements and particles by.
My rule of thumb has always been to give a coral at least enough flow to get the polyps moving a little. You may not end up with ideal flow but it's a good place to start. My setting sun monti doubled it's polyp extension about 10 minutes after upgrading from two koralia 425's.. Before it wasn't getting enough flow to move the polyps more than just the tiniest bit if you watched long enough, now they get gently tousled more or less constantly. It continues to be happy now.. Not saying you need a $300 powerhead but in my tiny cube it was the only real option.
they tolerate low flow or high flow but the growth form will be vastly different. If you want tighter whorls rather than wide plates, blast it with as much flow as you can. that said, obviously no corals respond well to a powerhead aimed right at them.
