Quoyi parrotfish reef safe?

Mine has finally started eating as well. He's very active when I watch from a distance but when I approach the tank he darts into a rock and then will slowly come back out. He has not touched any algae that I've seen, but loves to eat the NLS pellets.

Guys, I have a 150g 5'x2'x2' tank and my LFS has 2 Quoyis in stock and eating well they are about 5" each. Im debating going in on one even though the tank is a bit small. Thoughts and Ideas? Anyone else have one in a similar tank and done well?

Had one in a 220g that did fine. At 5" I would expect the parrot to only grow another 1-1.5" max

Thanks dmorty... I think its enough space if I get the smaller one even if it grows an inch or 2. My qt is a 29g bc so that may be a bit tight for 2 weeks while I do prazi and cupramine. Hmmmm

Just to confirm, is your tank is glass? They will mark/scratch up acrylic tanks I believe.

Also I would not worry about using the 29 for a normal QT period. Add long as you feed it properly and keep up on water quality, it should be fine.

They "can" but since they are algae eaters unless you tank walls are filthy with algae it shouldn't be a issue

Congrats, one of my favorite fish. Eating pellets?

Dmorty, hes eating algae and some pe mysis. The pellets are gone after i put em in and hes the only one thats big enough to eat em but he doesnt do it when im near the tank since he hides from me. I put in all types of food and between him and the two small wrasses in my qt its all gone. 5 more days in qt the dt!!!

Try some smaller pellets. It seems they prefer the smaller pellets for some reason. Mine liked the 1-2mm pellets the best. Would mostly ignore the 3mm pellets. I meant to ask do you currently have the false personifer in your avatar? One of my favorite fish

I wish!!! Lost everything years ago and had tank sitting dry til march. Right now its fallow til thursday. Then ill be adding a small leopard and naoko wrasse and the quoyi. Im also looking to order paired goldflakes. They will have the qt all for themselves for a few weeks.

I also do feed him the 1mm nls pellets. Looks like he eats em when i walk away cuz they r gone and i can see him eating stuff off the ground from a distance.

If your looking for paired goldflakes I would contact jordan@amongthereef.com. He can get you whatever you want. Interruptus anyone?

This is an awesome thread - my thanks to all who've shared their experiences with this uncommon - and uncommonly beautiful! - fish for all these years! (And to Dmorty for starting it in the first place!)

Not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure that in Leo's video quoted here, the gray parrotfish with pale bars that shows up halfway through, at the right side of the tank, and crosses to the liverock is a female S. quoyi. From what I've been able to glean, they look _nothing_ like the males, post-transformation.

~Bruce, who has only ever seen a single quoyi, whose LFSs occasionally get princess parrots that _aren't_ quoyi, who's been stalking quoyi almost every night this week on DD, and who's planning to bring one home once the 220 across the room is ready to receive!

Awesome!!

I've found one as well, from a shop up in Wallingford. Brought him home on Wednesday, he's been hiding to the exclusion of eating ever since . . . three days and counting...

I've had mine in QT for 3 and a half weeks. Still haven't seen him eat but he seems fine knock on wood. He is a lil reclusive but hopefully once in DT he will see all the other fish going crazy for good he won't be scared. He's about 4" currently
