Quoyi parrotfish

One has become available. Any thoughts? They say reef safe. My tank is "150" ga but in reality is more like 130. Mixed reef with inverts. "Go" or "no go"

Nope, would cause tons of chaos in your tank. Here is a quote from fellow reefer "Hormigaquatica"

Scarus quoyi has the potential to exceed 15" long. They are heavy bodied, active fish, and would require a large system with a Very good filter in place.

They are one of the few parrotfish that do not rely on hard corals for their diet- they actually eat plants/algae. However, they are very likely to chomp down on stony coral in a reef tank, just to get to algae growing around the polyps if nothing else. It Will be hell on a reef tank.. lol. That said, Quoy are probably one of the best species to try if youre dead set on having a parrotfish, theyre just best left in large fish-only systems.

Here is where I found that, post #8:

He's 6"

Currently have Bella's pair, clown, goby, blenny, six line, inverts. Bout ten frags and a couple good sized lps

Only one other fish I want to add after this guy. That'll be it

They will not reach 15", 10" is a stretch... Here is a thread I started about them. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2293760.

What other fish are in the tank with the parrot? 5" is considered a small one, usually come in around 7"

+1... They are reef safe, and need a fairly large tank as they are graceful swimmers and one or two strokes of their fins will carry them across a 6 ft tank with ease and speed. No problems at all with wrasses, smaller fish, inverts, or pretty much anything besides another parrotfish (my sailfin hates my parrot, but hates everyone in the tank at times though). Only bad thing I've heard is that they can scratch up an acrylic tank. Oh yeah. Mine will bump into some of my SPS when it swims past them from time to time and knock off the tips of them, but he doesn't eat them. It steals food from some of my LPS, but does so without any harm.

You'll find everything you need to know in that link DMorty posted. There's pages and pages of information there...

They would be more popular if you could find them. I looked for one for a long time, asked my LFS to get one and nothing. Good luck with yours if you decide to get it!

I had one that ate prepped foods only. Never bothered any corals or other fish. I lost him during an ich outbreak last year. I have since downgraded from my 330g to a 180 or I would get another. LADD has them from time to time. He came in at 4-5/8 inches and cost me around $250 on LA DD.

I have one in my mixed reef with about 30 other fish. No problems at all with acrylic, corals or aggression. They are hard to find so if you find one and want it, I would get it. They are easy to keep alive and pretty ick resistant like most wrasses.

Mine never bothered my acrylic tank. He did eat LR and then pooped in the same place all the time and made a big pile. Maybe they need LR of a specific type to keep their beak trimmed or they will chew on the tank. Also it is possible that the one in that thread was eating algae and it would not do that if the tank was kept cleaner.

Glass will be a non-issue. Mine and most others I have seen for sale only eat pellets. I'm getting one for my 625g and it's acrylic

Food is something I need to purchase more of. Seaweed a good option as well? I try to feed a variety. My Bella's pay no attn to seaweed but they eat everything else like pigs. I've never had to feed so much before. They just keep eating!

Quoyi parrotfish

They are sea cow only eats algae from my rocks. I had multiple and they act all the same. They never reach more than 10" from what I have seen, the biggest one I had was 7" smallest are less than 4". If you can find a small one, its will be the best fish you can have regardless of price [emoji16]

Mine's a pig. Generally, most of them are. Eats everything I put in the tank. Even eats other fish's poop if the kole doesn't get to first...

Call me the reefcentral necromancer for resurrecting this old thread... just picked up a Quoyi and he went through quarantine in excellent fashion. He's in the display now and I'd like to fatten him up. Any particular form of veggie matter or food that's most to their liking?
