R.I.P my roseafascia :(

Today is the saddest day for me. More sad when i lost my marginalis butterfly for no apparent reason (it was the only one in my country).

I've lost my favourite fairy wrasse, my roseafascia fairy. This fish is so rare in my country that it has only ever appeared like, 5 times?

Mine was the last and one one in my whole country and it's gone now.

here's the story. I obtained 2 females that were mixed up with some other fairy wrasses. No one saw it but i took notice and was so excited! the condition in which i obtained them was not very good, and one of them did not make it. no worries, because i still had one.

the remaining one was also a tiny little female. i treasured it alot and it was my goal to grow it into a big male.

over the months it grew, quite quickly i must say, into a small sub-male. i was pleased and i was so happy! i loved my rare roseafascia alot. i know it might not be rare in the U.S, but it's almost impossible to obtain one here.

fast forward many months later, almost a year, it has grown into a big 4 inch male. the tail has yet to fully develop yet though.

and then it's gone. i just did not see it anymore.

devastated. fairy wrasse and flasher wrasses have this sickening behavior of sometimes just vanishing without reason. has anyone experienced that before? or is it just me.

i don't know why, but i miss my roseafascia already :sad1:

it was fun raising it into a male. but why did it have to go like that.

Sad news, many years ago i had a pair of fairy wrasses disappear on me over a few week's time with no apparent reason.Where are you located?

i'm located in Singapore.

the thing is i always lose my fairy wrasse by dissapearance! it's just a matter of time!

so sickening i don't know why.

Sorry to hear Lemon.
This has happened to me also a few times before. We have talked about it in other threads.
One day they are out with the others and the next day, gone.
I lost my Nahacky that way a year ago. I'm just glad I was able to find another one.
Wasn't he becoming aggressive in your tank?

thanks everyone.

yes brad, the roseafascia was flashing everyday and was the king. it makes no sense why it just vanished!

apparently vanishing cirrhilabrus is very common in hobbyist world wide. i cannot find the reason! and the body of my roseafascia for that matter. a 4 inch fish just doesn't dissapear without a trace.

i've lost marjorie, roseafascia, female bathyphilus etc to this strange phenomena. one fine day, weeks, months, years later, they just gone!

i'm getting quite disheartened by this and makes me want to re-consider keeping this genus altogether.

Lemon. Have you discussed this matter with Dr. Tanaka at all? I know he discusses topics with you on occasion and would be interested in what he thinks on this subject.

I just purchased a super male roseafascia from Kevin Kohen at liveaquaria. It is fully grown with the sword tail and measures 5+". He is the largest fairy wrasse I have ever seen.

Very sorry to hear about yours by the way. Don't give up on these magnificent fish!

They are one of the larger fairy wrasses by far. And be careful, they tend to get aggressive. Although mine is a gentle giant. LOL

i guess they are considerate...don't want to show their deadbodies to the owner to add to the grief...;)

brad - i've asked this question to Dr. tanaka before and he has not experienced cirrhilabrus and paracheilinus species vanishing. his wrasses probably love him too much to do this to him!

auem - i would like it if they showed their bodies. dissapearing one day for no reason with no closure kinda bums me out. maybe they were abducted by aliens.

i swore today i saw my female hooded fairy wrasse dissapear right infront of my eyes. she was missing 2 hours before bed time. i really hope to see her swimming around tomorrow. otherwise i think i would just spiral into depression, LOL.

perhaps there's a bermuda triangle in all of our tanks that only opens up to cirrhilabrus. traps them in an alternate universe.

I've had similar problems with fairy wrasses, and it happens to the smaller halichoeres wrasses as well. :(

It seems that some people/tanks are able to consistently maintain and grow happy healthy fairy wrasses and keep them for the long haul (more than 2-3 years) ... but I wonder exactly how common that is, and how under-reported the disappearances are.

I've just given up on fairies/flashers and halichoeres for this reason. Too upsetting to have beautiful healthy fishes just vanish without a trace.

Lemon,

I have experienced the same thing and it is frustrating. Check behind your tank to make sure it hasn't jumped but you've probably done that already. Even taking a screen top off for a few seconds is enough for them to jump as they startle very easily. I'm perplexed by these periodic diappearances as well. Is it possible you have a large nocturnal predatory worm or crab? I once had a C. bathyphilus that jumped up and hit it's head on the acrylic covering my lights and sank to the bottom and died right in front of my eyes. It's possible they get startled after lights out, knock themselves on the head and their bodies are pulled into the rocks by the clean up crew, or a large worm or crab never to be seen again. Just some theories of mine.

The best theory i can come up with is that maybe one day they go hide at night and wedge themselves into the rockwork so well that they cannot dislodge themselves when the lights come on and die of panic, hunger or both and the CUC takes care of the rest?I say this because this afternoon i came home from work and my wife tells me a pyramid butterfly is missing,so i start looking for him and 1hr later i look into a cave and see him wedged in there very tight,so i pull the entire piece of rock out and see that he is dead with the crabs going to work on him.Yesterday he was fine, today dead,i had a terrible time pulling him out of the rock work, how the heck do they wedge in there like that?My personal explanation.

there are no giant worms or crabs that i know of.

i think the hide in the rock theory sounds ok. but i can't find it in my rocks.

I had a pair of huge 6+ inch Rosefascia fo quite some time then one day..poof gone. I lost a wrasse just 2 weeks ago in a freak accident and at first thought she would be fine although it didnt look good. I hoped she would come back out of the rock later but never a trace and trust me I really wanted the body so I could freeze it and potentially do something with it at some time. She was as rare in the US as your Rosefascia was in your country. I don't know why it happens this way.

Have had wrasses vanish for days at a time only to again like they were never gone. Unfortunately sometimes they do vanish forever. Sorry to hear about yours.
