are any urchins safe for a reef tank? i'd love to have a couple but everything i've seen so far says to monitor with corals. ???

IMP They are more trouble then they are worth. I have had a couple of different species. They can knock down small rocks, eat snails and starfish, they crawl over everything, distrubing leathers and possibily pulling up pulps. But I have still always been drawn to them. They look cool and eat coraline alega. If you do decide to get one, I suggest getting one as small as possible, to reduce the risk of any disturbance.

I have had luck with longspine urcins. Have one now he is growing rapidly however so I would buy small. They are also venomous so I always make sure I know where he is when working in the tank. I have LPS and clams and he has never paid much attention too them or bothered them.

I have had good luck with urchins as well, I have a blue tuxedo and a pencil urchin now that I picked up today, they do eat coraline algae which is a bonus for me, they keep the sides of my tank clean of coraline algae which some love, but drives me crazy
