Rabbit Fish

My LFS says that I can buy a rabbit fish to eat long green hair algae, my tangs eat the really short stuff but the long stuff they won't touch. Will the rabbit fish eat it?

There is no guarantee that they will eat the hair algae. Having said that, my last Foxface was very good at eating the hair algae. You may also want to look into a Sea Hare. They are excellent at cleaning the hair algae, but once the hair algae is gone, they need to be moved to another tank with hair algae. Otherwise, they will starve. You should also check into too much nutrients in your system, fueling the algae.

my emerald crab loves that algae. That being said, a foxface is a great fish to have in a reef

Mine will not eat it goes nuts for nori , good luck as most will say it's hit or miss .

My one spot loves macroalgae but I've never seen it go after short or long HA.
IME it is a good reef fish, as said.

You should also check into too much nutrients in your system, fueling the algae.

Sorry steerlersfan, IMO I think you're asking for trouble with this strategy. There are other algae that are more devastating to a tank, that can quickly overrun your corals, like cyano or dino. I would advise not doing this.

I believe what Steelerfan meant is see what is contributing to the high nutrient levels in the tank that is causing the HA to thrive. Get rid of the root cause rather then trying to put a bandaid on it.

Google turf algae scrubber. If it is a high nutrient problem this is an easy add on to any system.

I love rabbitfish and think they do great in tanks. There are some reports of them sometimes not being model citizens but I say they are great algae eaters and highly recommend them.

Its really hard to say I had two and they were very different. One ate algae and one didn't.
