Radion Powered SPS Nanocube

I think the problem on the price is on larger tanks when you need multiple units. It really does make sense for smaller tanks though.

Yes, I guess that is a valid point. I still don't see it as being much more expensive then any alternatives, getting multiple MH fixtures is expensive also :)

This tank looks amazing! Have you seen a good amount of color and growth with the Radion units?

Thanks!

Honestly my color was always good under the PC's I had before. I have noticed some darker colors have lightened up to more attractive shades and the LED definitely makes the flourescents pop more.

As for growth, yes, that has literally exploded. Some colonies that I had for 6-mo under PC and only showed slow growth have doubled in size in the 3-mo I've had the Radion, I was both shocked and impressed.

how did you acclimate your corals to the RADION? did you start off at a low percentage of brightness?

what brightness is the fixture at now?

btw, lookin good! :)

Thats awesome, i cant wait to add corals to my tank next week, i have 3 of them and might need to buy a 4th. So far i love the lights though, and all the things they can do.

there are a lot of people that are having second thoughts about them and rather than reading posts of people that dont have coral in their tank, im finding the people that have had good stories with the lights. just want to be 100% sure before i put 5k in live stock into a tank :D haha

thank you again, and your system looks amazing!

Well I started off thinking 50% would be sufficient for break in, but was WAY WRONG. It bleached out everything in my tank, and I lost my red planet colony. Everything else pulled through and colored back up over time.

After that, I dropped intensity to 20% and slowly ramped up over time. Currently I am at 45% for 2-hrs midday, and 40% the rest of the day. Total photoperiod is 9-hrs not including the lower-intensity sunrise/sunset cycles which last about an hour each.

I have some older pics of my profile on the last page, as well as videos of the full 24-hr light cycle. I am not sure about plans for ramping intensity further, everything is growing quickly (even acros low in the tank) and colors are great so I don't see a need for more light.

very nice.. i love those radions..

id like to know your water parameters, dosing, salt, ect. its not easy in a 28g all in 1 tank. i know from experience. i had a hard time keeping sps's in my jbj nano. granted it was my first tank and made a ton of mistakes.

i wanted to go with radions for my 6ft 125g but it was a little to pricey for 4 units.

Parameters
  • Alk: 8.5
  • Ca: 450
  • Mg: 1450
  • Temp: 77f
  • NO3: 0
  • PO4: 0

Dosing
Have manual dosed Kent Tech-M Ca/Alk/Mg for the past year - up until last week. Now using a Bubble Magus doser and BRS supplements. Still working on the dosage with daily testing, currently at 32mL per day divided into 8 intervals. The Kent Tech stuff was much more concentrated. Also started using Brightwell Amino Acids for broadcast feeding about a month ago.

Maintenance
  • 5g waterchange per week
  • RedSea Coral Pro salt
  • Tunze Osmolator for topoff

And thanks for the comment!! This is actually my first saltwater tank. I always hear people say it's difficult to run a nano but I don't know any better because this is the biggest tank I've ever had! I've definitely had my fair share of problems and challenges, but that's what keeps it interesting IMO.

good #'s. my biggest mistake was using a calcium reactor on my 28. i didnt know how to set it properly and alk got up to 16. fryed all my sps. they never recovered.

those bubble magus dosers are great. i have 1 too.

what method are u using to keep nitrates down? 5g w/c's enough?

have u testing the alk on that salt mix?

Running a reactor on a nano is too much work, space, and risk IMO. 2-part is very affordable in the small doses that we use. :)

My oversized AquaMaxx HOB-1 is enough to keep nitrates down on it's own. I do the 5g WC's mostly to replenish trace elements. I also run a dual-reactor setup (TLF 150's) that contain GFO and Carbon.

so your not using the internal filter that came with the jbj.

no skimmer? ooops just realized that the aquamax was a skimmer..lol

The stock filter is just a 3-stage media basket. I still use it, but it's empty other than filter floss in the top chamber.

I really like what you have done. Noticed that you removed the GSP. Your BN is starting to take up valuable real estate quickly. Looking good.
