Radion XR30W VS GHL Mitras

Anyone have both of these by chance and can compare? The Mitras seems to have much more LEDs and seems much larger.

This will be going over an Elos Midi so coverage isnt an issue on either.

I don't have either of them but a true comparison is the Radion pro vs the GHL Mitras. Even then the GHL will cover a larger area unless Ecotech changes something.

Again, this is all just off the paper for each.

Yeah I am holding out until the Pro is released to really compare the two. At the current price point though the radion would be the clear winner even if on paper the mitras is better you could buy 2 for the price of 1.

I own a GHL Mitras and have seen several Radions working and side by side, it's not hard to see the difference in brightness. The Mitras' intensity is almost identical to MH intensity and comes with newer cree leds. IMO, you can't go wrong with Mitras.

I did some testing with the current radion against my mitras, look in the ghl mitras club to see the results.

apart from the lack of colors which the pro is needed to do the compare, the spread was really really bad compared to the mitras.

like you said being cost effective you would need two radions to a mitras, but you need two pro's to really compare color and coverage...i think the cost wont be such a factor anymore. the PAR was higher in the mitras against the radion even with TIR lense on.

since this test my friend sold his radions and replaced with mitras....feedback is wow i didnt know i had those colors in my corals.

The pro is going to be around 850-900 from what I last read. 2 pro would cost you at least 1600+ where 1 mitras is 1200.

Not really sure if it's going to be twice the spread, but Rodney did some awesome testing. I was thoroughly impressed with the results and the fact that Rodney did what I asked him to do and that's par testing away from the light to gauge the spread of the light. Mitras is very impressive. I recently went to a lfs and saw a radion on a tank for the first time. I was very disappointed. The disco ball effect was horrible. The employee said it had to do with how the light was mounted. The light was mounted about 16" off of the water. It really was disappointing. I kind of was leading towards radions, at first it was kessil. But I'm not sure if kessil will work for what I want with out buying a ton of kessils. The lfs had another radion on a smaller tank that was mounted like 4" off of the water surface and the disco effect was even worse. It looked like what I envision a disco ball effect while on acid. I don't know if they just didn't have the lights tuned right or what the deal was but it really bothered me and makes me want to go with t5 lights, maybe wait and see the new powermodule from ATI. I can't imagine people being happy with what I saw in their tanks. Could someone with video capabilities post a video of the mitras.

I'm not sure what disco effect you'd talking about but my tank is rimless and I don't see anything like that on my radion.

My main complaint on the radion is the lack of an interface and no wireless interface with the computer.

I have a profilux 3ex but the Mitras doesn't take advantage of the computer at all and they haven't been real good about software updates in the past.

Depending on the cost it might be a better option for me to pay the upgrade cost from regular radion to pro unless the Mitras gets those upgrades.

Yeah, i dont understand why it looked so terrible. It was really the first time i had seen the radion in person. I have seen plenty of radions in action on youtube and non of them had this effect. It was very disappointing. The colors were not mixing on the sand bed. I could see individual colors moving about on the sand bed, hence the disco ball effect. I did notice that the more surface water aggitation, the worse the effect their was. Also it was not that bad on the coral, it was horrible on the bottom of the tank and sand bed. On the small tank where the light was mounted like 4" from the waters surface, the disco effect was really pronounced and weird looking, kind of psychodelic looking. So if anyone has seen the shimmer of a kessil a350, well it was close to that shimmer but the colors were not blending, i could see the individual led colors bouncing around on the sand. Has anybody had this happen with the radions? I could not deal with that going on in my tank. Consequently the lfs had the older ai sols on display as well and they were even worse. When i pointed it out to the employees, they just said it was shimmer. I thought maybe i was seeing things until my wife and a few others commented on how bad the lights looked.

Don't go with LEDs then. I haven't seen a single led setup where there isn't some type of disco effect going on. Some are much better than others but if you look, you will find the disco effect somewhere in the tank.

It comes with having a bunch of little spotlights.

Halides have a gentle shimmer and is appealing to me. On the other hand most of the LEDs I've seen have the shimmer so glitzy (cant think of a good word) that it makes it distracting and harder to closely look at corals without it bothering me.

After T5 and my almost 3 month old ATI SUNPOWER I've acquired a handful of 150w metal halide pendants and ballasts and really want the same shimmer on my T5 fixtures.

Give me LEDs intense enough to add some shimmer over the T5 bulbs and add a little extra PAR.

I do like the look of the mitras, very expensive though...

GHL Mitras software is new and evolving. They have been really quick to update and accommodate customers wishes.

Before ordering the Mitras, I was skeptical about it covering a 36" x 24" space. After having turning it on for the first time, I see that one unit has no problem achieving that kind of spread

Here's what it looks like over the tank:

As for as not taking advantage of the computer, I'm not sure what you mean. GHL will have a wireless module that will allow the user to controll and configure the Mitras via their Profilux. The Control center software for the computer is also available to customize all 9 channels of leds and is not difficult to use.

Updates are always released by GHL. It may not be often but when they do release them, they work without hiccups. This is one of the reasons why GHL is my preferred brand, they release quality products and software.

What I meant to say was there is no integration as of yet between the profilux and Mitras. My main reason for getting one would be to control it from my pc wirelessly which isn't a possibility until that module is released. Also for the price tag I would think it should have that capability built in.

I know that it's in the works but they are known for their long development cycles. As an example their smartphone app has yet to be released though it was supposed to come out macna and last word was a release next year.

Believe me I would have no problem spending the money if the phone app and module were already out.

What color temperature is the mitras at 100% on each channel? It looks much warmer than the Radion from the spectrum. Might be something to consider if you like bluer spectra.

It is a warmer spectrum.

The 2nd gen Radion is brighter then the 1st gen by a considerable margin.

I have been looking into LEDs lately for my frag system. One of the things I'm not really sure about on the Mitras is it looks pretty open to the elements. I feel like salt is going to get in the fixture through the ends. Does air draw in or out of the ends? Given the potential lifespan of these fixtures I am weary on open electronics.
