Rainbow BTA Crisis... please Help!

set your radions to acclimation mode at 65% for 2 weeks. Also if you see that the black crap around the mouth is staying there and the flow does not push it away then take a turkey blaster and softly blow it away from the nems mouth. I have 18 nems in a 185g tank and i have my radions set at 65%. They don't like it when i turned the intensity up above 65% but at 65% they are doing excellent. Radions are a lot more powerful then most people think.

I lowered the intensity and changed some of the points to be lower as well. What do you other radion users think of this? Mind you, it's 13" over a 75gal tank 48x18x20

Couple questions for you. What is your max intensity set at? How do you have the acclimation set up?

The profile is the radiant color profile but ramped up a little bit because of the height I have it over the aquarium. The intensity is currently set to 75%. The acclimation was at 50% for two weeks but has come and gone.

Here's how it looks.

I called eco-tech and they said it should be fine at 100% brightness because I'm using the radiant color profile which doesn't use 100% of the Radion's output. I still dropped it to 75% just in case but so far, even though the anatomy doesn't look great, it hasn't moved from where it was a week ago and hasn't lost color.

I think it's splitting but it's hard to tell from the photo. All the dying ones I've seen look like they melted. If it were me I'd give it some more time.

First off, your BTA looks to have crap being expelled from it's mouth but that may just be the picture. A BTA needs to be in flow. If it has junk hanging out of it's mouth and can not get it completely expelled, take a turkey blaster and softly blow it away. If it doesn't get expelled then it will start to rot in that location.

Just a quick comment on the Radions. 75% may still be too much for a BTA. I have 16 BTAs in my tank and I have my Radions set to 65%. My acclimation period is over and all my BTAs are doing excellent. Regardless of what EcoTech has told you. The Radions are too powerful at full intensity for many of the soft corals and Anemones. For SPS that's a different story. Even with SPS you cannot take an Acro from another tank and set it directly under the Radion at 100% intensity. You risk burning it up that way.

Bubble Tip Anemones will do all kinds of weird things. When they are dying they will die within 12 hours, not longer. One thing to watch on a BTA is the mouth. If it is opened up that is a bad sign. If it is closed then the BTA is still healthy it's just going through something. I never worry about a BTA unless the mouth is opened up and it will not take food. That is the time to really keep an eye on it. When a BTA dies, it will quickly pollute your tank. Yep, I know, it's a balancing act of do I get it out of my tank before it pollutes my tank or is it just going through one of its ordeals. Key to that answer is the mouth wide open. Also any BTA that will take food is NOT dying.

Hoep this helps you a bit.

I say see what it looks like in the morning. If it's still bad then remove the rock and smell it ... you'll know if it's time to pull it. If you can't remove the rock, use suction (like a turkey baster) if it's dead / decaying you should be able to extract it pretty easy. If it doesn't disintegrate then I would wait. They really look awful when splitting. Be ready for a water change and maybe run some carbon.

I think its on its way out..sorry:(

What did you use to check your phosphates with?
.25 is pretty high.

Please don't count that BTA as being a gonner just yet. Keep an eye on it and see what it looks like in the morning. Make sure you get all waste away from it; that is important. It's very hard to tell from those pictures but I don't think it's dying. Just keep an eye on it and keep it clean.

sjwitt reminded me of something else. If you have ever smelled a dead BTA you will never forget that smell. It will make you sick to your stomach instantly. So if you are absolutely not sure, you can always pull it out of the water and smell it. If it just smells fishy, no problem. If it smells so rotten it makes you sick..... Time to flush the remains and say a silent prayer. Then rush back to your tank and immediately do a big water change...

Thanks everyone. I don't own a turkey baster so I'll run to Walmart and buy one. It's 1:30 but I really want it to make it. Also, I lowered the set intensity down to 60, per your suggestions. I just hope that's enough light seeing as how it's only 1 radion over a 4' tank.

Unfortunately, removing the rock will be my very last resort. That rock is on the very bottom and somehow supports every other rock in my tank.

Yeah, I figured it was a foundation rock. When you get the turkey baster, gently target some flow at the center of the anemone... don't blast it. If it's dead it will fall apart. If it's splitting it will hold together but you might get some debris from it. Siphon off the debris into a small container, don't fill it with water ... try to just get the debris. Once in the container, smell it. If it stinks to high heaven then it's gone. If not, it's likely splitting. If it's spitting, leave it alone. When mine split they usually hide away so I don't see all the carnage. Then they come out after a week or so.

I just to siphon off the debris but no luck really. He's super deflated this morning but has also kind of retracted, preventing me from really getting to his mouth area.

I was able to get him free from the rock by massaging his foot. He actually let go pretty easy. He looks terrible but doesn't smell at all. Thoughts?
