Ok so ive got a rainsford and a small clownfish in my ten gallon, and after doing some reading i found out they are really hard to feed? If so what can i do so he doesnt starve? I havent seen him eat aside from pecking at rocks yet, but i just got him yesterday so he may just be stressed

Thanks

they can be difficult to feed. they're small, and from what i've seen of mine, prefer to graze around. i will actually see take small mouthfuls of the substrate or detritus and "chew" it through his gills.

i've had some success with him eating frozen cyclop-eeze and nutramar ova, both soaked in selcon. he will also chow down on some newly hatched baby brine shrimp naupplii, but they seem to be similar to a lot of small fish and dragonets where they prefer to just forage for the little stuff all day long.

how long has your tank been set up?

You can try feeding smaller coral food like cyclopeeze. That usually gets them going. I also suggest small seaweed pellets made by Hikari. They are cheap and fish that eat algae in the wild love it.

Not long enough haha. I mean i have good live rock thats crawling with stuff but im not ready for him. Every website i read said his care level was "easy" so i didnt exactly binge research about it if you know what i mean lol.

The pellets sound like a good idea, i could drop then right next to his hiding spot, and if he doesnt like them the hermit crabs will.

Would you say he has a shrunken belly??/how does he look?

Yeah he looks pretty skinny. Mine looked similar when he first arrived. He's nice and plump now. I'm trying to get a picture, but he's not cooperating at the moment.

Ok, well i soaked some flake food in garlic and spread it over the rocks, and i believe he ate it, as hes pecking at the rocks more than he ever has and sifting stuff through his gills. He also took a crap afterwards. Hes very skiddish and hard to watch from a distance!

Ive tried to find a lot of the above mentioned foods locally, but the weather and fish stores around here just suck. I think ill try and see if i can find some frozen pods or something online.

I know the quicker i act the better, i really hope he doesnt die! And thanks for the suggestions guys, ill keep you posted!

Mine likes to zip away too as soon as I come near the tank. I've had him a few months now, but he's still pretty shy.

Good luck!

I'm about to go grab some baby brine and feed mine shortly here.

Do you raise your own brine shrimp? I was thinking about it, but idk where i could buy the eggs on the fly. Maybe walmart carries them??

Most fish stores have them, but it's worth buying good ones with high hatch rates online.

Obviously any ones you got at the store would work great in a pinch. If not Walmart, try the usual suspects like LFS, Petco, pet smart, etc...

Amazon has them prime eligible too. That's where I usually get mine.

They're real easy to raise. Some rigid airline tubing, soft airline tubing, air pump, eggs, water, and two old plastic soda bottles.

Right ok. Im really just hoping for a quick fix to keep him alive until the cyclopeeze comes in tuesday or wednesday. (Amazon prime)

Im getting frustrated too because no one around where i live has anything he will eat and so ive gotta order on the internet and wait days to get it. I just wasnt prepared for this. Liveaquarias profile said hes easy and eats all this stuff and thats the farthest thing from the truth. Oh well. Just keep trying i guess...

I got frozen brine shrimp, but thats all they said they have. He may or may not be snacking on it hard to tell but i turn off the filter, let in rain brine shrimp, the leave the room for 30 mins and hope he eats. Oh well coral food will be here tomorrow, i think hell make it! I just hope he eats that....

Well i filled the tank with coral frenzy today and he appears to be nomming away :) ill post a pic of him in like a week if it works out

He disappeared :( i turned over all my rocks, i think he died and the worms ate him. Oh well ill be checking daily for an ammonia spike. Liveaquaria needs to not list him as an easy fish.....

I won't try a Rainsford again. Never could get one to eat prepared foods well. If you have a mature tank without a bunch of wrasse/hunters they might be easier to keep.

Yeah its bs all the fish websites recommend it for a nano tank because thats not the case at all. I would have been better off with another clownfish
