I have been setting up a Nano tank (my El Salvador tank) for several months now and had decided that I wanted it to hold a Randali Pistol Shrimp and a Hi Fin Goby..

Well I made a trip into town today to Kermits to pick up something he had been holding for me and saw that he had recieved some "Randali Pistol Shrimp" that I have been waiting for. So I picked one little beauty up that was just what I have been looking for!!

I was concerned about getting him located where I could see him, as I will only have one side to view from. Chris told me about the "JUST DAVE" method for getting them established where I wanted them. Kermits did not have the Hi Fin Gobies that I really wanted and besides I have read its best to start the Shrimp first, so I headed home.

Well my wife is sick and I got home and set the dripper up to climitize the shrimp and my wife tells me she would like some chicken from Schnucks, well closest one is at Ridgeway and Quince, but her not feeling well I ran out to get that for her. Since I was so close, I dropped by Memfish just for a look see, and what do I see but a sign saying "Hi Fin Goby" but he is not to be seen, I asked the young man that works ther if they had one or was it sold, He was not aware of one being sold, but dug around and surea s can be ther he was a really pretty guy.

Not knowing when I would see another I had to have him.

I took him home and used the "Just Dave" method for inserting the Shrimp in place and sure as the world he goes to digging, right where I wanted him. After 30 minutes or so, I inserted the Goby by the "Just Dave Shrimp and Goby pair insertion method"

And went to take the Chicken bones to the garbage.

When I came back not Five minutes later "I HAVE A CONSOLIDATED PAIR" iN FIVE MINUTES!! I took these pictures shortly afterward and have just been watching these guys all evening!!

I will post the whole build on this Nano soon, It has been a real labor of Love and I think I will really enjoy it, and pass on what I have learned. But I just had to show these photos!!

Thanks To Chris and Dave for sharing the "JUST DAVE" Method with me, I will let Dave pass on this special patented process, to the General public!!

The JDSGIM

Things you will need:

A length of 1/2" PVC pipe long enough to reach the area you want the goby and stick out of the tank by about 6"-8".

Cotton ball

Small diameter wooden dowel of sufficient length allowing it to project from each end of the PVC pipe when placed inside.

Shrimp Goby of choice ( larger gobies require larger diameter PVC pipe.)

1. Place the end of the pipe in the sand in the area that shrimp goby insertion is desired.

2. Rest the other end of the pipe against the top edge of the aquarium.

3. Insert shrimp goby.

4. Place cotton ball into the PVC pipe.

5. Insert wooden dowel and slowly push the cotton ball down the length of PVC while making sure the other end of the PVC stays in the sand. Stop pushing the dowel when you are about 5" from the bottom. This requires you to premeasure and place a mark on the dowel so you don't go too far.

6. Remove dowel and pull the PVC pipe back slightly so that the end is about halfway buried in the sand.

7.Take a deep breath and place mouth over the end of the end of the PVC pipe that is out of the water. Puff out your checks and give a hard quick burst of air down the pipe.

8. Remove pipe. Shrimp goby should now be buried.

9. Release pistol shrimp in the spot shrimp goby was inserted.

10.Once the shrimp digs up the goby during the borrowing activity the goby will be forever indebted to the shrimp and they will remain inseparable from that point on. As a side note it should be mentioned that the goby will be none too fond of you after this procedure.

11. Don't try this method anywhere at anytime.

I used a soda bottle with the end cut off to form a funnel to do the same thing. I think your way is better as you can get to more areas with that method. Our pair did change locations a few times but ended up settling back at the front of the tank.

I got a pair last thursday! They are really something. I tried to get them into the tank in the same location but one went one way and the other headed for the hills.

These guys were already buddies though and they found each other in under an hour. So far I have about 3 holes they have dug. They are a good pair -the pistol is a regular bulldozer and the goby is a real good guard fish LOL.

yeah i thought 11 was the final giveaway..although
I think it could be kinda fun watching your fish and inverts fly through a pvc like darts from a blowgun

My yashia goby had been in the tank several months before I found a shrimp. Before putting the shrimp in I turned off the pumps. As I was lowering the shrimp to the bottom he jumped out of the cup and did a kinda wild swim around the tank before finding a temporary hole. My yashia immediately came out and followed the wild path to the shrimp like a dog tracking a scent. They are buddies now but very reclusive.

We are really enjoying these guys, and just so you know the trip to your home "sperry" and seeing your beautiful Nanos, is what spurred me to go on and set up my "baby nano". I think it is something we are really going to enjoy!!

Now, My wife has me "inspired" to set up her a Seahorse tank.

This Hobby has started project after projject for me!!
