But this is your thread. How could that be worng? :)
LOL I was confused! Too many windows open!

A few more Linckia pictures. I actually haven't seen the little red one in several days. Hopefully it is OK and is just snugged up in a crevice somewhere. The rock has many good caves and hiding places within the islands...

New Fish

We think it is an Elegant Coris Wrasse, Coris venusta, but if so, it is a little bit of a risky fish IMO. The feeding habits of the Elegant Coris seems to include a lot of things that I've paid money for  so I'm going to keep a close eye on it...

The thing is, non of the pictures I can find of the Elegant Coris online have the yellow edged fins that my fish has. So maybe mine is a slightly different coris?

Here are some pictures...

This first picture is really wierd. The fish looks like it is floating in the air outside of the fish tank. Or maybe it was that coolaid I drank earlier?

Thanks alien! I take ten and get one good picture :D

My mandarin has been living in my overflow for five days. I finally screened it and got him out of there. He will have a difficult time getting back in there - I don't think he can get through the gutterguard.

Here's how I screened it. First I made a test piece and tried out a couple of different things. The best working system was a couple of small rings made from 3/4" thin wall PVC, slit open like this:

Then I took a strip of gutter guard and put a slit in it and put the ring through it like this:

It worked really well, so I made a full length one. When I moved the light and went to get the mandarin out, the blue linckia was in there AND Mr. Hankey the cucumber was in there! I think I smelled reefer in there too. They were having a party. Here is the final overflow screen:

The only thing I'm going to change is that I'll replace the pvc "clips" with black painted ones some time.

Thanks, I'm really happy with how it turned out. It will be nice to have the mandarin in the display area for a change. Since I got him, he has been in the overflow for more time than he has been out of it :rolleye1:

Not that I know of. I haven't seen anything chase the mandarin, and it has gone into the overflow even when the lights were on, not just at night.

This morning before the lights came on I was checking things out with a flashlight. The mandarin was just sleeping on the sand, nothing was around or bothering it. Since the sally lightfoot is out of my tank, the only thing that I'm concerned might bother the mandarin is a large bristle star. But so far, the bristle star has been pretty well behaved as far as I've seen. Whenever I've seen it touch anything live like a crab, it pulls back. I've never seen it try to grab something live.

I think I'm going to try another shrimp in the tank. I had two skunk cleaners dissapear ($30) so I think I'll try a large peppermint shrimp, which will be a little less expensive.

Update...

No new pictures yet, but some new fish! I got an awesome male mandarin to compliment the female that I got a few weeks ago. They immediately started hanging out together, though they both tend to be pretty shy so I don't see them much. Also picked up a scribbled rabbitfish. It's about 2.5" or so, with great markings. I have been waiting for my LFS to get me one for a couple of months and she finally got one. After it spent a week there and was eating well, it came to my tank. It is eating and seems to be doing fine so far!

I also finished setting up the last of the liverock - finally done with that after five months!

I think I am going to buy a Kole Tang - that's another one that I really like and the LFS has just told me they got a nice one in... They also have a nice Blonde Naso that I'm thinking about...

I think he is great. Really full of personality and not afraid to get out there with the big guys during feeding, etc.

LOL--I love the thought of the pot party in the overflow!

"Whoaaaa, Mandy--you are soooo psychedelic...."

If the party moves underground, you may start seeing some baby mandarins...who knew the key to breeding mandarins would be some non-marine foliage.

Yeah, I had to put an end to that party. You know - the lights and heat attract the DEA anyway... They're probably already watching my house.

Reef Tank Temperatures

Here are some good articles to read regarding reef tank temperatures. I am posting them here because I want to be able to find them easily from wherever I happen to be (not necessarily at home where my bookmarks are).

Now for some pictures!

First, my Scribbled Rabbitfish - Siganus doliatus
May nibble some corals - hopefully I will not have a problem. Hasn't shown any inerest in my hammer coral so far, which is the only stoney that I have right now. I think it may have eaten some sponge though. I had a couple of white smooth looking sponges, about half the size of a golf ball each, and the other day I saw that they were torn open and partially missing, and then the next day they were pretty much gone.

He's got a fat belly right now, can you see the bulge? I put a piece of nori on a clip while home for lunch and they started nibbling on it. When I got home from work about 5 hours later, they were still picking at it but it was nearly gone. I guess I put too big of a piece in! I had three or four fish who looked like each swallowed a marble! At least I know they'll eat nori really well!

I know I've posted a bunch of pictures of this little guy already, but he is so photogenic :)

This is a hammer coral that I got from Daywn when I bought some nice live rock from them. I found a good low flow area for it and it is doing really well. It fully extends when the lights come on and also responds well when I target feed it. It has three small heads right now. I think the polyps look nice and plump.

I finally finished the rockscape as I mentioned earlier. Sea in the City had some nice pieces and I didn't need too much, so I actually pulled out the wallet and paid retail for a change  - I'm really glad to have that done. The rock is set up with some of the pieces attached to the central closed loop return pipe via zip ties, and other rock just sitting where it fit well and then seated with epoxy putty.

For epoxy putty, I used "Aqua Mend" from Home Depot. It looks feels smells and acts exactly like the putty I've bought at fish stores and I've read of others using it with no problems. It is pretty inexpensive so I use it very liberally. Eventually it gets covered with coraline and is not visible.

I finished off the last island at the "back" and also added a nice rock to the middle island to give it that island a more irregular shape.

Here is a shot of the final island from the "couch" side of the tank:

And here is a shot from the other side of the tank:

And finally, another animated full tank shot from different angles
