Question on Randy's two part calcium and alkalinity supplement system. If the calcium chloride dihydrate (flake) is 99% verses 77-80% such as Dowflake do any adjustment needs to be made, ie 500 grams (about 2 ½ cups)

I'm confused.

100% calcium chloride dihydrate is about 76% anhydrous calcium chloride and 24% water.

Do you mean 99% calcium chloride, or 99% calcium chloride dihydrate?

I'm not a chem guy, so I can only go by what the seller has on Amazon. Please see link above "Calcium Chloride Flakes 99% Pure (CaCl2)"

The linked product looks to be anhydrous. You'd use 20% less by weight, which is likely about 20% less by volume than my recipe. :)

The description confused me, I think it's just calcium chloride dehydrate?

Not the anhydrous form

The description suggests that this is the anhydrous form and this form which can be used as an excellent desiccant. However this is the dihydrate.

If you buy it, we can determine which it is by whether it gets warm when dissolving in a small amount of water. Anhydrous does that, the dihydrate does not.

I have some Anhydrous Calcium Chloride that I purchased from a different vendor (Canada Reef Supply), and wow does it get hot when mixed. Scary hot.

I was using some thin plastic containers from the dollar store because I liked the size and features of them (wide mouth screw on flip up lid). The container deformed in a heartbeat. Needless to say I now use a more robust microwaveable canister as my mixing/dosing jug.

I am just about to receive the same product... If you find out for real which form it is please let us know...

The Amazon product mentioned in my post appears to be anhydrous Calcium Chloride I have tested a spoon full with a small amount of water and it got pretty warm (undissolved) before I dumped it out.
