Randy's Two Part Solution

I have been thinking about taking my Geo Calcium Reactor off line and switching to Randy's Two part Solution (or three part really) I have found a local place that i can purchase the dowflake from but i read somewhere that The Dow company was increasing the amount of Bromine in Dowflake as of sometime in 2007. I have been looking for an updated MSDS sheet online to no avail. Is dowflake still an acceptable source for Calcium Chloride?

Any info you guys could shed would be greatly appreciated.

They didn't increase the Bromine. The manufacturing process no longer removes Bromine. However, there's been lots of studying done and Dowflake has been used since then, with no problems to report. You'll find a lot more information about it in the Chemistry forum.

It seems to be difficult to locate the regular dowflake, I was able to find the Dowflake EXTRA which is 83-87% pure. Would this work and would i need to use less?

It has less water in it, so you use a bit less, yes. Use about 10% less.

Many are also using Prestone Driveway Heat with acceptable results

im not sure yet, i have some of the XTRA but am still researching for another brand, perhaps Tetra FCC food grade or Tetra 94.

There is alot of info on the Dowflake most of which says its not a good choice but all of those threads are dated back to 2007 and in some of the recent threads it seams not to be an issue.

It was (is) largely a theoretical concern. Few (if anyone) has had an actual problem with the new Dowflake that seemed to me to be likely to be due to the bromide in it. But if you have other options, there's no reason to not use them.

We still use DOW-Flake in Bromine/Bromide sensitive drilling fluids. And we are talking threshold restrictions in the PPM range. SO I don't think I'd worry about it too much.

Dow has sold it's Calcium chloride business. I bought some online that I thought was Dowflake but came in a bag that looks just like it but has a name of Knight Chemical LLC.

Does anybody know what company bought Dow's Calcium business?

Sales of non-strategic assets announced so far this year now total in excess of $2.6 billion, well ahead of the Company's original divestment plan.

The Company announced that it has signed an agreement to sell its Calcium Chloride business to a strategic chemical industry buyer for a value in excess of $210 million....
