Rare fish?

I just purchased a new innovative marine lagoon 25 gal and looking for rare fish to stock. Not looking for any regular run of the mill stuff, I like the deep water basslets but do not have deep enough pockets for anything like a gem tang. Any ideas? Want them to be completely reef safe as well as I like rare corals as well.

Welcome to RC. Divers Den has some uncommon basslets from time to time. Maybe a Heldichi Firefish. Your choices will be constrained in a 25 and chances are local fish stores will usually stick the more common smaller fish, so be prepared to buy on the Internet.

I work at the LFS so I have access to pretty much anything. I was thinking about the helfrichi fire fish but am scared of them jumping. The lagoon tank is only 12" tall and rimless so I'm staying away from anything that may jump.

Mesh net lid or some type of cover for your tank. All fish can/may/will jump. And I repeat my self again..all fish jump. You want rare fish, but don't surprised if a few go carpet surfing without a lid or cover of some sort.

While working at the LFS, what fish have you noticed that won't jump?

I'm going to have rocks and mangroves breaching the water surface so lid will take away the look of the "lagoon."

Lol, wrasses, anthias, hawkish, clowns,...almost everything will/can jump. I had a blue tang jump out before. Luckily I was there to get it

The main fish that do jump are the gobies, diamonds, Tigers, sleepers, etc. Firefish sometimes jump but other than that not many unless I am chasing them with a net.

in my home aquarium ive had these fish jump.

firefish x5
clownfish x3
watchman goby
valentini puffer
yellow tang
royal gramma x2
eel
hawkfish x2 (one long nose, one flame)

i also work at a lfs on my off time as a volunteer and ive seen ever fish jump. especially the firefish..

since ive had so much bad luck i added a clear mesh screen lid over my tank it looks so much better and its function cant be beat. if your not going to put a lid on your tank than id expect and prepare to come home and find your rare and beloved pet on the floor dead.

And how long have you been working at this lfs? One week? Firefish will jump for no reason whatsoever. Sleeper gobies will jump. I had one go carpet surfing while I was working in my tank with my canopy off. Oh and gobies will jump too. Search gobies on here and tag the word jump. I bet you get 1000 hits. Your theory of a tank will be beautiful if you have the wallet to replace your fish after your cat eats them off the floor.

Actually around 4 years or so. So you are pretty much saying exactly what I said. I know fire fish jump and I know everything has the capability of jumping. I have heard many stories of people who have had fish jump. It's not that difficult to understand. So when you are trying to tell me exactly what I just said it gets annoying especially since you say I don't know what I'm talking about. So before you start saying stupid stuff why don't you re-read comments and maybe, just maybe, they are actually agreeing with what you said.:wavehand:

Exactly, I understand that I was agreeing with you. Most people who read these forums use this information though. This is an information sharing place that people gain knowledge from. Since moat gobies spend their lives on the bottom third of the tank, most people think they won't jump, but reality is they do. That was the reason for the comment about your wallet. Find me a tank on here that has rare/expensive fish in it on here that is rimless and has no lid and post the link..good luck.

I'm sure there might be one or two out there...

For the most part I agree though, it's not worth it for your wallet or the fishes sake.

Joshky, I don't plan on putting any fish that are gobies or fire fish in there. Or any fish that have the reputation of jumping for that matter. I just wanted ideas on some rare fish.

Every fish has the ability to jump, the risk is yours to take obviously. I can't think of any fish that fits your description, unfortunately most of the smaller fish are at higher risk for jumping.

Having a 25 gal tank limits you on most of the good rare fish. So recommending rare fish that you can keep in your 25 is pretty much the smaller ones that are the worst offenders of carpet surfing. :lmao:

You need to x 10 the size of your tank and then you won't be so limited

A simple 'rule' to know, especially for someone that works at a LFS, is...
The ones that may jump are called 'FISH'
