Rare yellow sailfin blenny?

I was at a LFS today and saw a "rare yellow sailfin blenny". It was a real little guy - if it was an inch long, it was big and it was fat and happily grazing off the glass.

BTW - this is definitely NOT a midas blenny, it looked just like a yellow version of a lawnmower blenny - with fewer markings.

Anyway, I was just curious.

They are available now and again, in fact there was one on Diver's Den last night.

I got mine from there about 3 years ago -- great "little" fish, pretty peaceful overall, but won't be bullied.

When I first got it,

Whenever I see Rare! at a LFS I usually end up walking away. Just because they don't know what it is, doesn't make it rare and doesn't justify them jacking up the price!

I can count the number of times LFSs in my area have used the label "rare" correctly on one hand.

Mine never has. The only thing mine will do, in that aspect, is sit on SPS (( and clams )) and bother the clams when it is eating algae off the shells.

So very true.

Darn it Todd, you just caused me to spend some money. it was still on DD so I purchased it.

That is awesome. You are going to love it. And don't freak out, when at night time, it turns gray.

Mine, many years ago, "sleeping"

I am glad you told me. I have two places to put it: one is in a 350 gallon tank with no similars, the other is a 240 gallon tank with a fang blenny. Any issues?

I have never had another blenny in the same tank, so can't say for sure. Might be better off alone, mine won't start "fights", but will attempt to finish them. My Coral Beauty tries to push mine around, literally, and the blenny will just take it. But, if the CB keeps pushing, it will end up with a scrape/bite mark on its side.

Interesting. My Lieutenant tang must get them from my king starry on occasion. Every once in a while the tang has a perfectly shaped circled "bite mark" I guess on it's side. Lasts a few days, then it's gone.

I didn't think the yellow sailfin was "rare", but I also have never really payed much attention to them either. It was a cool looking dude - only $30 from QM.

...aren't these guys 'fang' blennies?

If Mr. Snorvich lost a fish to jumping it would be one of the great ironies of Reef Central lore. :)

Oh, I don't know. I might leave a feeding top off. I became so paranoid because I DID lose a fish to jumping. The jumping warning was for me, I suppose, since I have this fish arriving on Tuesday.

I have mine with a Midas Blenny. I had the Midas first...they fought for a few days and now they just ignore each other. But the Golden Sailfin does NOT like anything that is smaller and Similar shaped! He has killed every sand sifting goby I tried to put in along with 2 mandarins and Neon cleaner gobies! I added a large bar goby after him and he never bother it since it has a few inches on it...Never bothers other fish, just similar shaped. Great little guy though, lots of personality!
