Rastas Loosing Orange?

MyOwnGrowOp

Zoa Addict
I have a question for everyone. When i got my rastas, the orange on each face was a fairly good size. Now, a couple months later, all the rest of the color in the face of each zoa is very bright, but the orange is getting smaller and smaller. Almost to the point of it disappearing... Has anyone else had this happen? will it come back in lower light or something?

I would think lower light would actually make that happen.
Many zoanthids would need proper light to maintain their original colors to certain degree. If you offer less light that it needs to keep their pigments it will loose that particular pigment. Some zoanthids need proper spectrum also. Otherwise they will morph (gain or loose pigments). So I think you would be more PAR or more "white" (?) in your case.

Let's see what others will post...

Well they are in only a 10" deep tank... With a radion pro on it... With a TIR lens kit... So do I just need to give them a "whiter" light?

I think what you can take from the recommendations is to first move the polyps up. If after some time (don't expect it to happen over night) that doesn't fix the problem then adjust the whites.

There is a thread in the lighting forum that talks a bit negatively about white leds because they are not true white and they recommend you attempt to get white light by adjusting the RGB to get the color you want which should include all the spectrum you are looking for.

it is a lighting issue. I've had this happen to mine and i gave them a little extra light and booooom! orange came back after a month. takes time man.

I just acquired some maricultured rastas - or so I was told. Could have been wild as they came with a "japanese deepwater" order. Lost the orange, too but I"m told that's common with wild ones. My understanding is they are surge zone zoas from Taiwan and grow in shallow water on jetties, bridge pilings and shallow reefs. I've got them under SOL blues, 6" below my fruit loops, which definitely like high light and flow - alternating best. I'm hoping that moving them up will get me the proper color. Oddly, many people tell me they keep theirs in much lower light.
