Rate GEO and Tunze

Thinking about a GEO 618 calcium reactor

With it:
Milwaulke pH controller
maxijet 1200
5 lb CO2 bottle
Milkwaulke CO2 regulator
(pick a media?)

Anything better for the set up above? Maybe a different regulator, or is that one good?

Tunze 6000 stream (2) with multicontroller

Would these be OK in a 125 gallon reef? 2/3 of the tank is SPS and the other 1/3 is softies that I first got, every coral now on is SPS, maybe a few LPS here and there.

If I switched out a koralia 4 and a seio 620 and put the tunze in the same spots the other powerheads were in, will this cause any problems with the SPS corals not liking it?

Thanks.

Geo makes a great calcium reactor. I have the same set up described above. I would recomend large media if you decide to go with a GEO.

t5Nitro,

calcium reactor GEO(ehiem or external) or MRC(external) are both great units

from that list above I would personally change the regulator to something else, I had a few issues with Milkwaulke unit, but I think they change the design...

I like jbj, very nice solid unit, simple, cheap, that gets the job done

I like tunze, feel is better flow and corals would appreciate better,

good luck on the setup, sounds like you are not making that mistake "buy cheap now, be force to buy better later" routine

Agreed. Schuran-type media for the Geo. Actual Schuran works pretty nice - I've heard that the Gen-X media isn't bad either.

For that size tank, if this is going to be SPS dominated, I'd go with the larger Streams - the 6100 instead of the 6000 (though pretty soon, both will be replaced by the 6101). The feasibility of this will depend on how coarse your substrate is (or whether you have any)

I have the reef grain sized sand in a DSB. 6101? Is this a new one comming out? How many GPH is it rated for? I can't get into the 1k + range in dollars for two powerheads though.

I was looking for large media for the calcium reactor, nothing says small or large, I don't think anyway. So schuran is large media?

It is already SPS dominated.

Thanks!

For questions regarding the 6101, I refer you to this thread. With a DSB, 6000 speeds may be better - otherwise, you may be looking at a sandstorm though it'll depend on your aquascaping and how old your tank is.

Schuran is large media, yes. Anything that has grain size around 6-10 mm or above would be considered large grain. Something like this might be a nice choice. I have this and it works really well.
