RBTA looking like wet noodles

I've had this RBTA for almost 5 months now I think, he acclimated quickly and has been very healthy. Two times now I've seen him go from completely open and healthy to sucked in and looking deflated (see pics).

Yesterday he went from looking like first pic then to looking like second. Then today he looked like first pic then now he's looking like second one. What is going on?

I noticed the light exposure is different, and the position where it is on the rock is different. Does your light intensity change throughout the day?

The first pic was taken at night when the moonlight setting was on and I was using a gel filter. Other than the ramp up/down the lighting stays the same.

His placement actually is the same - his foot is on the back of the rock and he extends outwards during the day and retracts at night.

I wonder if it retract at peak light hour? Maybe it doesn't like the light intensity.
