RC on the fritz

What's the deal. Off and on for a week I either can't get on, or when I post it goes "offline".

What does it mean when "the server" is too busy? What is "the server"? Where is it? How can the internet be too small?
 
Lol Cully. RC traffic has been pretty elevated these past few months. The server that hosts the site has a certain bandwidth capacity and if too many people ask for it simultaneously, it can't give you any data and you get the "too busy" message. The only real solution is for RC to upgrade to a server with higher bandwidth which can support more simultaneous users. But since that's not free, don't expect it anytime soon ;)
 
It has to do with how much of the site is being accessed. Normal people visit the site and go from forum to forum. When it's searched, all those seperate forums are hit at once making the normal traffic bogged down.

It's a bit disappointing because I pay for my RC, and the performance is rather pitiful.

They have 185,000 members, so if only 1% of the members are RC sponsors, they bring in about 45k per year, PLUS their ads. This is more than enough for them to upgrade to a better hosting package. If 10% of members pay, they'll easily bring in 500k per year. That's an amazing amount of money for just hosting a web sever with forums.

This could possibly be a limitation of the database for the forums as well. If they can't scale out the DB, then they tasked with upgrading the server. Still, with the amount of money they bring in, they should be able to do something.

i agree. i hate when i get that there is an error or that the server is busy. as you said for us that pay it is kinda the poopy end of the stick that we are getting...but ohs well, hopfully it will get better...:)
 
maybe it's time to force everyone to pay and upgrade this piece... while still allowing a 6 mos free trial for newbies to catch the addiction. Yeah, people could make a new name every 6 mos... but I bet it would make a huge difference in the money they bring in...
Not to mention, with this much traffic, sponsors could be charged more, and they should be able to attract additional sponsors (which they have as Ive seen a lot of new ones out there)
 
Besides not being able to connect lately it has been extremely slow when trying to post a message.

I really need to donate, this site has been a life saver!! :D
 
There's development that's underway for the newer software. To switch to a new version on ANY level is an undertaking, on this scale has to be huge.....


If you've ever done any forum work you'd see some of what's involved.

It would be interesting seeing them try to integrate everything to a different forum, won't be an easy task but I'm sure a task that they will have to make someday!

I think they need to upgrade to more and bigger servers. They only have 3 servers with one database which is very uncommon for such a large forum. Is been like this for years now.
 
I don't know what a server is or even a database. Are you saying there's some central Uniblab computer somewhere that runs this? I just thought it was "on the internet". How can that be contained to a finite space? I just don't get it :confused:

When you visit any place on the internet, it's to a physycal server or group of servers somewhere.

A website is absolutely finite. Most servers have so much overhead that the finite limit of connections is never realized. In this case when you get those messages that finite limit of concurrent connections to the database is causing it to throw a message. There's so much traffic and so much searching for information here that even with a good group of servers and good writing, that limit is still realized.
 
What's frustrating is....

I'm in the process of seeking VC, and writing a business plan for a potentially large, web-based enterprise.. Fractional server space with a big company is fairly cheap; know what they charge vendors here, it's VERY cheap comparatively.

Unless RC is running their own servers (Dumb), it's not an expensive prospect to increase your portion of the fractional server, and request more bandwidth. The ad revenue alone should easily offset the costs, let alone the Supporting members, and Businesses.

It has been a mess. Delay and more delays.I thought upgrading to premium membership would help. It hasn't. Or if it has it must be totaly whacked for the others.
 
what is up with this updating in the Morning i cant get on untill like 8:30. i would just like to know what they are doing. i wounldnt mind if they out right say hey we are changing some things and from this time to this time the server will be down. Just want some info.
