40 Gallon Breeder - 6 Weeks Old.
Cycle is complete.
DSB with 50+ lbs LR.
It will be Reef Only.
Tank was and is Magnesium Deficient and now dosing 80 ml a day to bring levels to 1300-1400.
Ph runs 7.98 to 8.03 consistently through the day.
CA was over 600 last week and is slightly under 580 as of this AM.
Dhk is consistent at 10.
I double test with Pinpoint montiros for PH and CA and API tests to run out testing issues and both tests are consistent in results.
Am now (as of last week) using IORC as salt (before was Ocean Pure) and SG is consistent at 1.2040/32.4ppt/49.5mS.
Water change is aerated by both air stone and powerhead for a minimum of 24 hours prior to introduction into the tank with like SG.
Coralline aglae growth is noticeable.

AM I DOING THE RIGHT THINGS TO:
***************************
#1. Raise MG eventually to 1300-1400.
#2. Lower CA to high 400s/low 500s
#3. Hopefully raise Ph without dosing ALK or using Buffers

I believe (:-)) that I have printed and read all articles on RC that reference CA, PH, MG and their relationship not withstanding have head a hundred different opions and recommendations on other reef forums.

Any one's input or guidance will be graciously received and appreciated.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!!

Randy recommends the following levels in his articles:

Alk: 7-11 dKH
Calcium: 400-425 ppm
Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
pH: 7.8-8.5

I would mix up a batch of your salt mix to a salinity of 1.0264 using a properly calibrated refractometer (many hydrometers are off by quite a bit and can skew your levels quite a bit). Test your salt mix and see what levels you get.

If your saltmix is high in calcium, then you will not be able to reduce the level much unless your tank occupants use a lot. Many salt mixes have calcium concentrations around 500 ppm.

You should not be adding any form of calcium supplement to your tank such as the calcium part of two-part. If you are running a reactor you will have to turn it off until your level drops.

You are using the Pinpoint meter for calcium?

Did you ever add a lot of calcium aside from via a salt mix?

If not, the value might be reading a bit higher than it really is. As Cliff suggests, try checking some new RC salt mix.

I agree with raising the SG to 53 mS, slowly, via evaporation. Just top off with saltwater for a while.

None of those numbers are far enough off to be an emergency or even likely to be harmful over the short term, so I wouldn't be worrying too much. :) I've seen far worse numbers.
