Real Idols Please Stand Up (Was: Idol Tanks)

joefish's 58 was a favorite BB of mine until he moved most of the SPS out and moved ricordeas and anemones in. 58G Oceanic:

i have a smaller tank, one thing i gotta say once i swap some frags i gotta replace with salt water LOL. in my older 120gallon it takes quite a bit to lower the saltlinity and all i gotta do is add some salt in my sump. In this 40 gallon levels and tempurtures swings a hole lot less. yes maybe bigger tanks has bigger equipment, but also more efficent equipment as well as more area for SPS to grow so they dont kick each other's ***.

Ummm...any reason smaller tanks can't just go in the original 'idol' thread?

Because they have "special" needs.

For the record, I design, install, and maintain aquariums for a living. I presently care for systems ranging from 12G to 18,000 gallons.

Smaller systems require a lot more frequent attention to dosing and feeding. Problems arise a lot faster and can be more devestating in smaller systems, especially when an organism dies. I have more emergency calls on small tanks than I do on bigger ones for this very reason.

If you are spending big $$$ on a tank, most of my clients have me design it so most of the equipment can be cleaned easily.

Every system I've done larger than 500G have built-in wash downs on the skimmers. Even still, I find larger skimmers easy to clean because you don't have as many small crevices to get into with small brushes. A simple hose with decent pressure and warm or hot water and you are done. I clean old school ETSS 5' downdrafts at the shop in less than 30 minutes each.

Again, this comes down to how the system is designed.

If you aren't running an auto-top off, why not? They are needed on most systems and are quite simple to devise.

I'm in the 12G nano cube at the shop more frequently than I am in the 120G. The 12G needs algea whiping and water changes more than the 120G.

Again, this post wasn't meant as it has been taken. I could have written my initial post a little differently. We could sit here and argue this for the rest of the year but it's not the point of the thread.

It doesn't matter if you built the Georgia Aquarium, you are still not going to convince me that a smaller tank is harder to care for than a larger one, or that it looks any better. Show me one small tank that gets more attention or email than JBNY or 64ivy and I will formulate a skimmer nog concoction that will have pigs flying. :p

I think he should have titled the thread "Idol tanks under $2000"

now THAT would be interesting because i have spent well over that on my 65g and i am not even wet yet...I would have had to cut some corners on equipment quality to keep it under the $2K mark.

I really don't think he said it was "harder" to keep, persay...I do agree however that they require a more detailed attention with regards to water parameters. I don't see how that can be disputed. A 5 gallon bucket of water will pollute faster than a 500g, pretty simple. That being said, why must he show you a tank that get's more attention than those two you mentioned. Larger tanks are higher profile and so they get more attention, and those two memebers are highly active on the boards as well. That's the whole purpose of the thread, to show smaller, less high profile tanks. In a sense, your comment about attention to those tanks just lends more reason to have a thread like this. Maybe we can get a chance to see something new that we don't see everyday here on RC and the normal stuff in the nano forum.

While I agree that perhaps he should have chosen a difference way to phrase the request...seriously, just let the thread move on. Why does everything on this board have to become a dung fight.

I guess i am the one that instigated all of this and i am sorry.... didnt really mean for it to turn out so nasty.

That was what I thought the point was, too.

I know personally, it's hard to post my 58 next to 180+ gallon tanks. Given what I've seen - I'm not alone, and a lot of small tanks tend to not get posted a lot.

That's why IMO a smaller-tank photo thread might be a good idea. So often the big tanks dominate the photo threads [not suprisingly] and IME after a few pages, no one posts smaller tanks anymore. Nothing wrong with that - but thus I can understand the desire for a smaller tank thread.

Then again, perhaps another title would be good ... it takes a bit of ego to post yourself to an `idol' tank thread IMO. Not exactly something you nominate yourself to, or at least where I'm from.

While others may nominate - I'd rather just see an `under 4 tanks' thread - whether amazing or just starting. Seems like we'd get a good % of sweet ones that way.

As for what requires more time ... IMO that's a wash. Only difference is in the price of a water change IMO ... gallon for gallon, both require a lot of devotion and time.

I just was thrown off by the title of the thread.
When he said "Real Idols" he makes all the other tanks in the prior thread irrelevant and demotes them. Also the fact that he stated that "anyone" could create a large reef.

I know it's an endless argument and im sorry I threw the thread off, it was not my intention to start trouble.

I will now refrain from commenting in this thread.:D

I think this thread was doomed from the title. If anyone is wanting a thread with smaller tanks then a new one should probably be started. I can see a lot of people not even bothering to click on this thread because of the offensive title. Maybe the new thread should just be something like "full tank pics under 'x' gallons" or "small tank owners please stand up" or "post pics of your smaller tanks" or something similar.

Maybe someone should start a new thread. Just a thread called - Show us killer SPS tanks under 100G (or whatever size/specifics you want to limit it to). I think that would be a great idea. I love to see big tanks but I also love to see how smaller SPS tanks look.

I agree with you and both the two posters below you :). Another thread title may be in order!
