What are some reasons for zoas and palys to bleach? Some of my are bleaching right now and my water params are fine. Could it be too much water changes? Any ideas?

where they started in the bottom and then gradually moved up as time passess?
or where they immediately placed mid to high up the tank rock work?

type of lighting? age of bulbs ?

I have a 4x39watt t5 fixure. The bulbs are about 8 months old. The zoas have been on the sand bed the whole time then about two weeks ago I started noticing that they started getting lighter and yesterday part of them is transparent.

Try raising them several inches. leave for 2 weeks or so, if starting to color up move up several inches again. then repeat, but if they start getting lighter after the 3 raise, then put back to the 3rd level and leave there. They also like good flow.

Well I have all my zoanthids and palys down at the bottom and most of them are doing fine. My vivid rainbows dont open much but they were on the frag rack closer to the light and they started getting a brown film on them so I did a revive dip but they still dont open much. And my tubb blues havent grown at all since I got them even after like 3 dips. I think it might be something getting in the water? I have some hose clamps on my return pump that have started rusting a little bit and i havent had time to get them out of there. Could the rust be putting unwanted minerals in my water that is affecting the zoas? Also my nitrates are 0. Maybe this is the cause?

Not all polyps ( zoanthids/plays/protopalys etc ) are alike, some like low light, some mid and while some love uber high light. You have to play with the placement till they show their best look.

I had the same problem, my cheapo canopy to bring my light higher, had the metal screws on it rusting and some of the rust got into my tank. I didn't know why some coral started to look bad till I noticed it a couple weeks later. I did a large water change removed the canopy with the rusting screws. Corals looked better since then.

they can also not be recieving enough light being too low in the tank as well.

What about my vivid rainbow palys though? They developed a brown film on them so I did a ReVive dip so now all the brown stuff is gone but the heads are still barely opening. It kind of looks like the mouths are pushing out and thats it. What can I do?

Zoas and mushrooms are low light creatures. I keep mine under PC for max color. T5, MH, & LED seem to bleach them over time.

My zoanthids seem to have been doing great for a number of years under 250 watt mh lighting.
It's when I used pc lighting, they looked pretty dull.
