i basically started on auto mode....then once i got used to all the buttons and read through the manual enough, I went through the ISO settings in P-mode and just got used to all the basic settings, picture formats etc. (although you cant take RAW pics in full auto)
once you get a tripod you can start taking taking pics in AV mode.
a nice little experiment is to set it up on the tripod and focus in on your subject, then experiment with the aperature settings. taking a picture at each F-stop and then looking at them on the computer to compare the depth of field. that will give you a good feel for what you are doing.
for moving subjects, such as fish....i use TV mode and play around with it for a little bit until i get the shutter spead correct where its fast enough so the fish dont blur.
those are pretty much the only modes i ever use. i sometimes go into full manual when i can't get exposures just right. i dont think i've ever used the special auto modes before.
