Rebirth - 1500l

Just read through from the beginning. I’m setting up a 680l so at the moment I’m reading build threads for ideas. I love your two islands with all that open space. I plan on doing something similar. Looking forward to seeing your tank when it’s all grown in, keep up the good work!

Thanks.....

The open space is a must for me.....I don't imagine myself setting up a tank in a different way.
I'm sure you'll like it too.

Hi Alex,
thanks for the link to your thread. As I said before you're reef is beautiful! The rebuild has already come a long way. I really love setups that aren't aesthetically overdone. Minimal rock work with nice open space and great coral placement. IMO, you've really nailed down the art of aquascaping. Looking forward to future updates. Your photo skills are also impressive. Do you shoot RAW and then edit? What software do you use?

Thanks Todd,

The tank is going very good so far....
That's my favorite setup untill now and I think that will improve a lot in the next year or two.
Sometimes I shoot RAW but most of the times I shoot JPEG...
In both cases I use Photoshop CS3 to edit it.

Best Regards

Alex,

Just catching upon this thread. I had admired your TOTM in the past but this rebirth is spectacular! Following along.

No new fish
No new coral

But some new photos.

Slowly the sps are regaining color and are starting to grow again.
The greens, the color that suffered the most, are turning a little better too.

Until the end of 2017 I was doing monthly FTSs but from now on, I'll be doing it bimonthly just to register the evolution of the tank.

I think the tank needs no less than 2 months to start to look like it was before the problems with nutrients/Ra.

I'm now keeping a very little portion of chaeto, of the size of a tenis ball.
And I'll harvest it more frequently to let the nutrients level of the tank rises again.
To help with it I'm feeding the fishes with fresh food again, heavilly, and I'm dosing a lot of stuff, with a positive response (Koralcolor, Aquavittro Fuel, Borochrom, Ferrion, Lugol's ,Potassion)

Hi Alex
good to hear things are turning to the bright side again. Lovely pictures.
I am interested in your dosing schedule for all the elements you are adding (Koralcolor, Aquavittro Fuel, Borochrom, Ferrion, Lugol's ,Potassion)
Would you mind sharing?

Hi Janci,

My dosing schedule right now is:

Koralcolor - 10ml/day
Aquavittro Fuel - 30ml/day
Borochrom - 30ml/day
Ferrion - 30ml/day
Lugol's - 5 drops every other day
Potassion - as needed, to keep the level around 430ppm

But this isn't reference for nothing and no one...
My tank is getting out from as very very depleted water condition state and even myself, intend to keep this schedule for more 1 or 2 weeks and then, reduce it.

The bigger problem of dosing micro/trace elements, Iron, Boron, Iodo, aminos, vitamins and things like that, is the lack, or even the inexistence, of reliable test kits.
So you have to do it based only in your personal experience and the knowledge that you have of your own system.

To try to do the same dosing schedule in a diferent system could lead to some MAJOR problems...

Best Regards.

Hi Alex, thanks for the info.
I was just interested in the quantities and frequency. i have no intention to copy anything.
And yes, I was also interested in your testing method, but as you say, trace elements are difficult to check and mostly rely on an experienced eye.

I have some trouble with that (I am only very short in the sps business) and like to know what changes do you notice when trace elements are depleted or are in abundance?

I just want to make that clear to warn someone who drops in the thread, read that schedule and think: Oh...I think this is a good idea.
Don't do that in home, kids! :lol2::lol2::lol2:

I think the kind of water testing made by Triton is just great.
It provides some good and accurate information, but it's not available here in Brazil.
So, I'm forced to guess what's going on.

The most visible sign that my tank was depleated was the pale colors....some sps, like setosa and vermiculata almost turned to white...
But this isn't not a rule and it's something hard to define.

Regards

I am amazed by your scape. That is very extraordinairy.
Also I notice you have very few fish. Some might be hiding, but it seems so.
For 1500L these fish can not produce enough NO3 for sure and can also explain the pale colours.

You're right....I have very few fish and I intend to keep it that way.

But some are hiding due to the change that I've made in the lighting, trying (and failing miserably :headwallblue:) to get more accurate colors in the video.

All that open space is screaming for some pelagics.

I have 5 Green Chromis...It was 7 (2 died) and I'm planing to get 4 or 5 more.
:fish2::fish2::fish2::fish2::fish2:

And I have 4 anthias...
:fish1::fish1::fish1::fish1:

They provide some moviment in the the water column
