Recomend a QUIET HOB skimmer!

I have a 40 gallon breeder coral reef tank in my living room. I have had a CPR Bak-Bak with a Maxi-Jet 1200 on it for the last year. I did a few mods on the skimmer - drilled out for better air intake and put a pill bottle on as a muffler. It works great, the volumes of think brownish/black gunk it pulls out is amazing. However, it is LOUD, really LOUD. It bothers the heck out of me and finally last night in a fit of frustration I pulled it off the tank and stuck an Emperor 400.

I would really like to replace it, but I need something QUIET. Any recomendations? It must be HOB.

The Coralife 125 is very quiet. If you are interested, I have it running on a 29g I'll take a video and post it.

Coralife 125 is crap sorry dude, go with the brand new reef octopus hob, they did some things to quiet it down more, they are a bit more but runs circles around a coralife, anyday.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will investigate them more.

BTW - I did have a Coralife 125 a long time ago. I didn't like it but I am glad it is working out for others.

Just got BH 2000 hangon reef octo wonderful skimmer, extremely well made, huge skimming coulumn and quiet, Best skimmer I have seen in long time When It breaks in should skim well. Reef octos from the hangons to sump models from here on out quality, fair pricing, not ridiculuous outrageous prices like some others and skimmers WORK!!!!

hey jt, what size tank are you putting the bh2000 on? bioload on that tank? I'm wondering if its a legit skimmer for a moderate bioload 75-100g tank.

i'm considering the bh2000 as well for a future holding tank where i keep fish i dont want in my DT.

Hi, I don't know what some consider quiet but I just got the BH 2000 and it is far from quiet! I can hear it in the next room. Looking for answer as to why it is so loud and if it will quiet down eventually.
Thanks

I don't have experience with other skimmers so can only comment on mine. It's very quiet. AquaMaxx HOB-1. The automatic fans are louder.

If you want quiet, an old school counter current air stone driven skimmer is worth considering. All they need is a low volume water pump to move water thru the skimmer & an air pump. Most air pumps available are fairly quiet. Don't know anything about the construction of Backpack skimmers, but you might even be able to convert the thing by simply adding an air stone. Most people already have a few small pumps/powerheads & air pumps kicking around, so for an investment of a few bucks in an air stone & some acrylic tubing, you could try it out. If it doesn't work well enough you can still go shopping for a new skimmer.
