Recommend best SE bulb

Im actually doing a little experiment. Even though I love my 10k xm's.....both with actinic supplementation in one tank and straight 10k xm in the other..........I have really liked the looks of some of the tanks I have seen recently running reeflux bulbs.

Im due for new bulbs in both systems so I just ordered 3-10 k reeflux, and 2-12 k reeflux, and Im going to run them this next go around in both systems and see what I think for overall appearance, coral color and growth.

Thats one nice thing about using 10k XM's and their brightness. I dont foresee needing to worry too much about acclimating to a different bulb. :)

I recently upgraded my lighting.... from 2x175w JBJ 14k to 2x250w Reeflux 10k running on Coralvue E-Ballasts, with T5 HO Actinic Supplementation.

The color is a Crisp White.

Without the T5's the color is yellow. But the T5's do bring out some blue. And I do agree the colors do look a little bland. But the Growth is amazing.

For 2 days One of my bulbs broke and i had to run a back-up Bulb in its place. Hamilton 250w 14k. You could see the difference.

The Reeflux side blew the Hamilton Side out of the water.

I have no experience with the 12k's but the 10k's are bright!!!

Too bad on the website stated above, he didn't include the Reeflux bulbs....... I wonder how high on the PAR rating they are.

Yes they are the nicest worst bulb I have ever seen! ;)

Obviously you haven't tried the JBJ 14k bulbs....... I had to use 6700k T5's to drown out the Blue.

I think what tkeracer is saying is that they really do have a nice color to them.....too bad they suck so bad.

I recently switched from Reeflux 10k to Reeflux 12k and am loving it. The 10ks washed out the color and made many corals look bland. The 12ks are more whitish blue, which really brings out the colors in my greens and reds. I run 2 54w T5 actinics, but with the 10ks you could barely even tell the T5s were on.

The coloration is very important, thanks for the suggestion. BTW, what's the PAR on the 12k versus 10k?

When are u gonna do the test, i would love to hear about the results :)

bulbs are due to be changed in my 225 as soon as the new ones get here. Ive got a couple months left on the bulbs in the 90.

its hard to tell with that blue background he uses. Dont get me wrong, I think his tank is as sweet as anyone does and hopefully someday will I be even on the same playing field. But I really dont like the blue back.

flyyyguy, interesting tought, you think blue will make the corals stand out more, i would think that black would a little more.

cello, do you supplement with actinics or not, can you post a picture with your setup, or comment of coloration and overall look?

thanks.

Gorgeous bulb, ran it unsupplemented on a reef fanatic e-ballast

wooohooo, i just bought two 12k 250W Reeflux bulbs from HelloLights, they offer shipping. I will let you know how they perform when they arrive.

Thanks to all who helped me make this decision, i just hope it was the right one :)

you did good =]

nope never tried those..... I did check out the ReefOptix 14k. Was a real nice color, but my t5 actinics put out more par... or atleast are probably close

Here is a spectral comparison between the Reeflux 10k and 12k.

I would assume that you would get better growth under the 10k and that more corals like the peaks in the 10k one. Perhaps not surprising and taste is also a factor as mentioned. I run only RL 10k and I think they need to be combined with blue light as well. They are BRIGHT under lumenarcs and coralvue electronic ballasts!
