Recommendation for A Good Walk-Around Lens for Canon XTi?

Yes it is not an L lens. But I think that is only because it is a ef-s lens and not an EF. EF lens, although not compatible with full frame or 1.3 crop factor cameras, will serve me wiell enough since I don't think I'll get anything more than prosumer cameras, such as when they upgrade the 30D. Other than that, construction is awesome and pics are better than some L lens.

The 24-105 though is a great choice. Very nice lens if you dont need the wider angels.

Yes, agreed JediNinja. The 17-55 IS/USM is on par with the L lenses, at least from what I could tell. I tried that one out as well as the 24-105L, as well as the 24-70L, and it was a very difficult decision between those three. They were within $100 of each other, so $ was not a deciding factor. I am trying to stick with EF lenses just in case I do go with a full-frame down the road and the 24-70 was VERY heavy. But largely, it basically came down to my shooting style (I don't do a lot of landscape and I usually like to get close-ups so I don't use the wide angle a lot) and me wanting to have a little more reach with the 24-105 for a walk-around, despite the fact that I also have the 70-300 IS/USM...but who wants to be lugging around lenses and changing them during a vacation. Believe me, I'm not badmouthing the 17-55 IS/USM. It was easily my second choice behind the 24-105.

Good luck with it and I am sure you will LOVE that lens.

If you dont do much landscapes, then the 24-105 sounds like the perfect lens for you.

Oh, dont worry. I didnt think you were badmouting it. I just keep on going when its discussing photography. I've found I sink just as much money into it as my reef.
