Recommendations for Brand of RAM? Video Card?

Hello to all,

I am refurbishing my old computer and need some advice.

I need to add a gig of ram or more. I use DDR400 PC3200 on my machine, any brands come highly recommended or bad ones to avoid?

Anyone have some extra chips?

I also need a full sized video card (AGP). I was looking at the 512mb's; same questions as above- who to avoid & who to buy?

Anyone have a 256mb or more please let me know =)

Thanks to all, can't wait to get this running again.

Jen sounds like you are trying to upgrade without buying a whole new machine...I need to know a few things about your current setup to help you out.

Cpu brand and speed (example AMD or Intel 2.0)
Brand of computer tower
Current amount of ram, frequency (example DDR or Dimm 2600, 4400) and how many slots are still open

these answered questions can give me a better idea at what you currently have. Feel free to ask for references or credentials.

You can't go wrong with any of these...depending on your price range.

I've got an ATI Radeon 9800pro (AGP) I pulled from my old rig....it's 128 mb ddr however. It did run all of the current games at medium to high settings though.

not sure there are that many 512 mbs 3d cards in AGP, they are in pci-e now. maybe an overclocked geforce 6800 is the highest out there. dual-sync ram?

i have some ram if you want to trade for coral. ddr 400 pc 3200 i might have 1gig its not the name brand stuff lower end kingston value ram

Buy the cheapest RAM that is the right type -- it's all basically the same, and any decent store will let you return defective modules.

Cool deal, here it goes,

I have 4 ram slots that each accept up to 1gb
Currently there is one 512 chip that I'm pretty sure is pc3200/ddr400

The cpu is a p4 2.53

Motherboard: ATX ms-6728 designed for Intel chipset 865pe Neo2

The case is large, like much larger than most. It has 2 fans so it makes a great gamer's pc.

I don't play too many high demand games, just wanted to buy the best so I don't have to replace it in a few years. To be honest a 256 would probably be fine.

Cool deal, I'll check them out. If I don't find a 256 I'll pm you on the 128 =)

What type of programs or games are you going to run that you need a good video card?

No need to pay too much for a video card if you are not going to need it, or the programs you use dont need it.

Honestly, I really only need a $50 256mb card

That would cover the games I like for a few years until Vista is functional =)

I can put together a package for you with memory and video card and you self install or I can do it with the following:

Memory
KINGSTON KVR400X64C3A/512 512MB PC3200 400MHZ

Video card
XFX GEFORCE 6200A 256MB AGP DDR2 DVI/TV

$125 Self install

I would pass on the TV card, (all in wonder), spend the extra 25 dollars ono a slightly better card. the card will last be good enough for an extra six months longer then the all in wonder card.

That or just save the esxtra money.

The tv functions are not all that, certainly no where near as easy as a DVR machine or TIVO...

Hi Daniel,

Let me work on these onther deals, if they fall through I'll drop you an email =)

Hi Bill,

I agree on the TV cards, I had one and never used it....however any trade beats buying =)

Fry's has good deals. Look in the paper or goto one. Corsair makes great memory. I would get Cas2 timing spd. For XP a gig should do it. You could get two 512 or just the one gig. On the video, agp is done. The very best would be the 6800 nvidia. I personally have a ati 9800 pro. When looking for a video card you can't just look at memory, cpu speed is very important. Before you buy anything look here http://www.anandtech.com/ You mite have to dig alittle but it's a good site for reviews.

And PNY video cards have a life time warrenty and some others. I had to return a PNY card once and thier CS made it easy.

Here, check ou t this site. I buy a bunchofstuff frm them all the time.

Let me know if you see anything you migth like. I am already suggested
