recovery from Complete bleaching

I got some corals via ebay (my least fav way to buy coral but I had a 100$ GC sitting there.

I got a few things to minimize the shipping.

The Montipora that I really liked the look of was the only one with a problem. It looked like a coral skeleton you might find on the beach in the tropics. Pure white.

Everything was packed well (triple bagged) enough of an air pocket. Cooling pack inside Polystyrene box. Made good time from Oregon.

Can corals lose ALL their color and survive. I put at the bottom of the tank.... but is there any point, it is hard to see if it has any flesh at all. Bag water looked fine and clearish.

Bah. I let seller know and await his response.

I get the feeling that the consensus is... it's dead buddy; move on :( (just guessing from the amount of response)

It doesn't sound good but it can't hurt to do what you are doing. If you see algae growing on the skeleton it probably is a gonner. Do you have a pic? I had a piece of coral get knocked into my rockwork only to find it some 3 weeks later completely white. It has since made a complete recovery.

You can never tell.I had a sps that I put up to close to my light and the thing was white I broke it off and thew it in the bottom of my tank and 3weeks later it came back:eek:

not sure about SPS, but my Armor of God zoos bleached a total of 3 times completely, recovered each time a bit, and are making a good recovery now... though not 100% but I'm still trying. They just won't stay on the darned rock and/or frag plug.

usually if its pure white it's a goner, if the first color you see is green it's most likely algae growing on a skeleton.

However who knows there can be a hint of flesh in there.

Pure white.... no algae. I've never had a recovery from this white but we'll see.

The seller doesn't even need a pic... he's a little worried that he might hear it from more buyers as he noted his colony is bleaching today. Has promised refund or will ship another piece if he gets a second similar colony.

Also, I've never seen a bleached Zoo! I've lost when they won't stick and they may lose their "pop" but I didn't know they ever would bleach.... I suppose anything can lose its algae.

I had a tri-color type acro fall in a bucket of cold RO for 10-15 mins without me know till later... turn white as a ghost......... took almost 2 months to fully recover to this...

When I upgraded my light to 400W, most of my zoa bleach. My favorite one bleach so bad, it looks like another zoa :( ..

delsol650; I'm not going to ask why.... Been there with some live-rock. Stinky.
Elite; the Zoos I got from you are still the most colorful thing in my tank.

I think the changing of my lights (not an upgrade, just new ones) bleached my Idaho grape. It still isn't what it was but it's hanging in there. I'm going to be a lot more careful the next time I replace the bulbs.

I'll just explain anyways...

I was redoing some rockwork and placing corals at different places.. had a few buckets infront of the tank and a bucket with water that got cold from the previous day ( unused ).. had a bunch of corals on top of tank.. knock a couple of zoo colonies/ that piece with my elbow... ( zoos fell on top of my RBTA ) panic set in and didn't see the acro fall foward into my cold bucket of RO... till after I was done rescuing the zoo's and moving other corals around....

Sorry " MAYNOR " that was his previous piece.. its well now and actually colored up way better than before... Ive' also given frags of it to some friends incase something happend to it again...
