red anemone (strawberry / african pygmy) reproduction

I purchased the anemone pictured below last February and wanted to post some photos of it and its apparent reproduction. I bought it as a red African pygmy anemone and have not been able to determine an exact scientific name.

It seems to spend most of the day closed but extends fully at night or if it thinks it is getting fed. It appears to like high flow as it moved to a more direct flow location but seems to not require much light. I have 2 - 20W PC's (incandescent style) in a hood and it is located close to the top of a 10g but right between the two bulbs. (The hood is a cheap hood where each bulb screws in and points out, leaving about a 3-4" gap between them). I have been feeding it small pieces of krill.

Recently I looked and noticed a smaller one next to it after it had moved. I thought it had left a piece behind that was developing. A while later I came home to find the pictures below occurring. It actually releases mini anemones out of its mouth opening. They are complete proportional anemones. I have had about 15 released in all in the last several weeks. Some attached but due to an algae outbreak from poor water supply (which has been corrected by a recently purchased RO unit) most end up catching a piece of algae and moving with it. I had been able to get a couple to transfer to a rock but most have ended up missing. I currently have 2 attached to the same rock as the parent and 2 that I now am containing inside a container at the bottom of the tank.

I recently fed the anemone and had a clown pull the krill from it. To my amazement I found a small one stuck to the krill. I was able to stick this one to a rock as if it had glue on the bottom. The krill was covered in slime from the parent so the child had never attached to anything yet so it was receptive to placement. I think as I clear my alagae I will be more successful.

I would like to know if anyone has any info on this anemone that they can help me with, especially if you have had one reproduce similarly. I am gaining experience on what works and what doesnt but would love to be able to raise more of these smaller ones.

THANKS!
Daniel

I got one about 3 months ago, it has grown to the size of a dime and has not produced any off spring yet. How big is yours.Mine eats like crazy, and has very sticky tenticles.

Mine has not harmed any fish. I have had the clowns touch it before and they were ok. As for the size, it is about 1" around and tall. I bought it at that size and it has not grown any more. I have not yet been able to gage growth rate on the babies.

These anemones are very aggressive, if they come in contact with another one of the same species it will sting and try to eat it.If the other anemones are the offspring of the first one they get along fine. You don't want them in a tank with other corals.

in the other words, they are just like majanos :)

Well sorta, They are really suppose to be in cooler water, like around 55 to 65 degrees. Mine is doing real good so far. I like them because thet are small and bright red.I have it in a 5.5 gallon with 18 watt pc's.

I got one about a month ago and I now have a baby one too!!!
I was wondering how it reproduced!

My temp is 80 btw

No problems it is healthy

Got one of these also, about 3 months old now, waiting on the thing to give me a baby! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: LOL I was feeding it everyday but now I feed it once every 2-3 days.

Mine are in 77-80 degree temp and producing more since I began feeding more often. I have about over 40 in my 20g long tank.
