Red Bugs

Hurt

New member
Well, I unfortunately noticed a few of these critters today on 3 of my acros. I did a little bit of research on how to get rid of them and it seems Interceptor is the unanimous choice. My tank is a 55g with a 20g fuge. So what size pills do I need to successfully treat my tank? The 51-100 lb. size or smaller? Could I buy the size for smaller dogs and increase the dosage to a whole pill? Is there another site I could get them cheaper?

So all inverts must be removed? Hermits, snails, stars, shrimp? Do I have to treat 3 separate times?

Thanks in advance.

You need the larger pill. The smaller ones do not have the same dosage of medication and for whatever reason using more smaller ones will not produce the correct strenght.

You do not need to remove snails, stars.

If you can remove all the Acro's and treat in a QT.

This IS the best way to do interceptor IMO this assures you that the are out of your system by leaving the display acroless for more than 5 days and you can overdose all you want without worring about killing all the pods in your display .

A 40g breeder(100 bucks Tops)would be ideal to hold a good amount of corals for the QT period. If done right in the QT it may only take one treatment depending on dosage and flow in the tank .

The qt method will only work if your acros arent encrusted. All acros need to be removed. Im dosing as we speak. I am doing it for 24 hours and I will do a large water change tomrrow. Supposedly 1 24 hour treatment is all that is necessary

The QT method WILL work but not if one is too lazy to pull out their corals and remove the encrusted areas .

Its all about how much work you are willing to put into it.

Also the bit about 1 treatment working refers to a QT setup where there is no rock and dead areas where meds don't reach.

I only treated once in my display, no red bugs since. I have a lot of flow, so i doubt there were any places the int. didnt' get to

Good for you :D Glad it worked....But that still doesn't mean that it will work in all situations. Wasn't it EB that also said they develop a tolerance and that the reason lots of people have reinfections even after not adding any acros was contributed to lack of flow not allowing meds to get around the corals in the display.

Just trying to play it safe.

I also did overdose, used almost the whole large pill in my 90, total water volume of about 125.

fighting them as well in my 210. two weeks ago I added a hole pill, then last week I added another pill. I will add a higher dosage today and then do a water change later this week. What's odd is my cleaner shrimp are still alive.

i had some hermits live through the overdose, pods were back a week later, not quite as rampant as before, but getting better. I don't have any shrimp in the tank, but there was a hitchiker crab that was eating stuff, and i am guessing he is dead. bristle worms were unaffected. overall i was surprised at how easy it was, no negative effects on any corals.

I dosed nearly a full pill in my 240 gal. a full pill will do 500 gal. It has been nearly 24 hr and i will do my big water change this afternoon. as of this am I still had a few hermits that eluded me that looked fine, although I could see last night that the pods were dying. Im going to try the 24 hr method. if they come back Ill do 3 treatments the next time. I have plenty of the drug.

A pill doesn't treat 500g it only treats 380g .

Also Here is a Quote from Eric Borneman about whole tank treatment. Why QT treatment is better

rationale: treatment in the tank should be avoided for several reasons: a) it will be impossible to assess whether or not a 100% kill rate has been achieved; b) in tank treatment will result in mass loss of other suscpetible species including amphipods, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, polychaetes, nematodes, copepods, and possibly other invertebrates which have not been tested for toxicity to the drug ; and c) repeated treatments can result in resistance making future treatments more difficult.

I know its a pita to get all the corals out but really I think the effects of a in tank treatment out weigh the trouble of taking all acros out . Plus then you can do 100x dose in a 24hr period and be done with it . Then you just wait 3-5 days to reintro acros into the display.

I will be tearing this all apart to treat for pests and to reaquascape. Is it going to be fun nope not at all but it will be worth the trouble . IMO

you are exactly right on the dosage. my mistake on the dosage. I think that removing all the Acros will be very tramautizing to them, breaking, handling etc can kill them... Im not being lazy, I just want to eradicate them from my system.

Just tried to order Interceptor from 1800PETMEDS and it proceeded to say that I needed a prescription for my dog from the Vet?

How has everyone aquired Interceptor?
