Red Carpet

Well today i found out just because something doesnt sting your hand that it can sting the underside of your arm pretty good. What happen was i was moveing some rock from one tank to another and my red carpet Anemone who has decided the tank wall is his favorite spot caught the underside of my upper arm and let me say it feels the same as being stung by a jelly fish and so far it has been 2 hours and it still is burning like its on fire and welts all over. So the lesson i learned was you can easly think things cant hurt you because you have touched them before but come to find that they just might find a piece of thin skin and tear you up.

Jelly fish and corals are closely related biologically and use the same sort of stinging sells if I'm not mistaken. Most of the remedies you've probably heard to help jelly fish stings may work as well with this or at least I think it is worth a shot if your hurting at all.
I've got a pair of gloves I bought, from coral life, that I use sometimes. I especially use them when I buy live rock because I usually get fiji that is collected in the wild and who knows what is in it. It hard working with some stuff with them though and I still find myself doing most things with my bare hands.
One of my old professors said he taught his children that their skin was thick enough on their hands to pick up the local jelly fish.(not true in many areas with many species) His kids used to chance the tourists kids around with jellys. Lol
I hope it is feeling better.

Ken and I had a discussion about this a while back concerning fire coral. While I'm fortunate enough to not be susceptible to these stings, Ken is a lot more sensitive in his skin.
One thing ALL reefers and especially parents should have on hand, is a bottle of Benedryl. It's probably the best temporary medicine out there for allergic reactions of any type.
While it may not be a cure, it can delay the onset of most symptoms enabling you to get medical attention in less stressful situations. It's also great for bee stings.
As Gord posted, gloves are essential even if theres only a slim possibility of a sting.

oh yeah, my fire coral would always sting me on the underside of my fore arm when cleaning the glass. it wasn't strong enough to sting my fingertips through the callouses but when my arm skin was softened up a bit from cleaning the tank, a brush on the arm would leave some nice red welts and burn a while. doesnt sound as bad as the red carpet though, Joe.

Well its been few days and i still have little bit of red marks (kind looks like a rash) but the burning stoped the same day but the welts were sore for a day or two. The carpet doesnt effect my hands it just happened to hit the underside of my upper arm where the skin is softer. Believe me i wont let it happen again but my wife got good laugh out of it.
