Red Dragon Frags

It's a nice piece, if you think it's worth it go for it. I can't say i would or wouldn't until I've seen one in person, but I've paid that much for frags. Smack dab in the middle of my tank is a bubble gum milli I paid a fair amount for, but I really dig them. Hopefully one day it will grow into an amazing piece. For now it's just a hairy brown frag with hints of blue/red and a little GFP infection lol.

Besides who is to say whats over priced. If you like it, got the money, won't miss the money then why not..if it's TOP Ramana for a week or an Acro then you should probably be rethinking the hobby. ;)
Yeah, I completely understand. It looks nothing special now and it's a very tiny frag but I see its potential and value once it grows out to a huge colony. 250g's old colony is my inspiration. I agree that it's very expensive but I wouldnt rush to say it's overpriced. Value is in the eye of the buyer
It sure looks pretty but as a reefer Im tired of getting price gouged for a stick that someone gave a cool name. Maybe if all reefers unite and boycott the sale of Red Dragon the price will drop so we can all share in the beauty. But if you like it buy it!
I think chalice corals are infamous for price gouging based on wacky names. I just saw my miami chalice corals once going for a thousand being sold for 350. That's insane. If I grew mine into a colony, I would be more than happy to sell frags at a tiny fraction of their costs to bring prices down but I dont do this for a living so...
I used to get all upset, I still think the naming is silly, but it is what it is.. Until we get controllers that can constantly test for ALK, Calc, Mag, Salinity, for ultimate control and easy tank stability So everybody can have a perfect SPS farm of a tank.. Those that can grow will always be able to set the price for those that can't.. unfortunately I'm still in the can't category.. but i'm getting better ;)
A dosing pump that tests and adds the amount needed would be awesome.
I think everyone is nuts!

However, after seeing what people blow in a casino and/or a gentlemen's club, (term used loosely) I am all for, and in agreement with your insanity.
HAHAHA good point and thanks. and it's safer than drugs right?....
I think we should go back to calling it the firefighter fuchsia:sad1:
I would have never thought of that name. What do dragons and fflowers have anything to do with this? If we called 'em by their real names we'd be experts in id'ing corals
I wouldn't spend that kind of coin on the piece that is 1/3 dead already. If I had to pick, I'd probably spend the extra money on the piece without STN. If you go with the first one and it continues to STN then you will end up wanting to buy another one and will then have spent $300+
Do either of these peices have PE in person?
Yeah, second one would be a better choice. The encrusted one does look like it has some pe in the pic. I'm not to worried about that. I think our tanks at home are better than the ones at the lfs since we're not always adding and taking stuff out on a daily basis. I rarely see pe in lfs tanks
If you belive that your tank can support such a coral then do it, Greg is a very accomplished reefer. I would not think twice to buy from him.
Who is Greg? Reefraft?
If you can afford it, I'd get the second one since it is already encrusting.

On a side note, who cares if people think you're crazy. If it were a common sps, everyone would have a large colony in their tank. Yes I will use the word...currently it is a RARE color morph in the hobby. When it gets more popular and more people start fragging it, the price will come down and the mass judgers will buy it then. But until that happens, let the people judge you while you are happily looking at your newest frag in your tank!

buy it buy it you must have it in your tank ..they are soo cute...I have yet to see a full sized colony pic though do they exist?
i'm sure they do but some ppl may not be posting 'em since they dont want their pm box to be full. 250G had the prettiest one and the largest one I have seen. Not sure what happened to it though since I read he downgraded to a 50gallon tank. The coral in the reef colony didn't impress me as much. I have high hopes since 250g doesnt dose any other supplements besides alk ca and mag
Honestly, if I had the money I would get the second one. Appears to be healthier and a hardier piece. Plus, it has branches, as opposed to just corallites, and the coloration seems to be better.

You also have that whole full tissue thing going on ;)

EDIT: Just looked at the second pic again... bottom right of the frag there appears to be something fuzzy? Check that out.
The second one is placed in low lighting. the first one in higher lighting. Thanks for bringing that up. I had a few acros with a mollusk looking thing attached to them before. Their mouths would open and close and they would dig themselves in the acro and had feathery whiskers on them. Do you know what they are called? Do you think its harmful?
buy it bro, it's a sweet coral :D

there's always going to be negative comments about expensive corals ;)
Yeah. I'm an optimist. I've been holding back from buying it for a while. Oh what the hell.
Brian lets buy the 150.00 frag 75.00 each, you grow it in your tank then we frag that sucker you get 1/2 and i get the other 1/2
No worries Denash, I heard its a fast grower. Once it grows out I'll frag u a piece for free. Just remind me like you did last time ;)

Those are barnacles, not sure what species, but they would have to be burrowers since they are in the skeleton. I recently bought a colony that had quite a few of them along with an acro crab. He hasn't tried to remove them and they don't appear to be causing any ill effect to the coral (localized or overall).

My RD does not encrust and I had it for 5 months now so if you like it, want it and can afford it, then go for the one that is encrusted. JMO...

The encrusted one looks like it's shooting new branches too. Are you a navy Seal?
But what makes it "expensive"? cuz its the new flavor of the week?
This coral is not a flavor of the week for me or else I wouldn't even be considering paying that much. I like this acro regardless of whatever everybody thinks about the price and looks.
Supply & Demand.
if i decide to buy this, I'm hoping by the time it's big enough to frag the demand will still be where it is now so i can recoup the cost and have a lil mini colony for free!

here it is! My new addition along with a mike paletta pink tip stag and jose casas candlelight concert stag.

So jealous! I'll be knocking on your door in a couple of months when my tank is ready. May I have first dibs on the rd when you decide to frag???

Good looking frags, good luck with them! Keep us posted with pictures. Good move getting the encrusting one.
Thanks. I got two other wacky named chalices as well. I dont think i'll be buying any corals for awhile. Just window shop. the one I got is not the same as the ones pictured. I got it from a local reefer and it's much bigger.
the paletta isnt a stag. not sure what it is
it's a stag. the mother didnt look like one.

my friend just went to the coral farmers market in ontario today and told me a guy was selling a frag the size of the one in the first pic for 50 and a huge nicely encrusted one with lots of branches shooting out for 200. The guy said he needed the money bad for a tank upgrade. If it's still expensive by then, then sure. hopefully mine makes it to a fraggable colony
I think you made the right decicion. That frag is much nicer than the one with the receded base.
Thanks for the advice ros sco!

takes some serious marbles to make a purchase like that, hope it works out and may it bless you with many frags. you seem to have a great sps collection going, i might have to hit you up as well sometime. gl

Nice choice Brian. Only time will tell when I get a frag. I had the money to but one, but I choose other corals for the time being.

Good thing is some of my friends have it so I know somewhere down the road I'll be able to track one down.

Took a bunch of top down shots of my corals today. :) Don't mind the green cyano. saw vivid's 800 gallon and was suckered into buying amino acids.
Me: WOW! How do you get all those colors?
Vivid: We use amino acids, wanna try it out?
Me: for sure! LOL.
