Just added to Live Aquaria recently and seems like a perfect canidate for my tank. Looking for input/advice/opinions as I have no experience with them. Red Elongated Dottyback

I've got a 40Long Reef with mostly peacefully fish
  • Yellow Watchman Goby/Shrimp pair
  • Bluespot Jawfish
  • Green Clown Goby
  • Bangai Cardinal x2
  • Ocellaris pair/BTA
  • Crabs/Snails/Stars
Also plan to add a Coral Beauty or Flame Angel If I can come across a nice and colorful specimen when I have the $.

PS: This/these would be the last fish added, wouldn't run a higher bioload.

Dottybacks can be unpredictable (and some downright aggressive), and with 7 fish and another planned, I don't know if I would tempt it....

I hadn't seen this one before - pretty fish!
The little write-up sounds great! I wouldn't mind hearing how someone Else fairs with it first :)

obscure species.

that's desirable IMO. Gotta watch out for possible aggressive nature though....

Obscure and rare are exactly the reasons it caught my eye, and being cautious of Dottybacks aggression is why I put out my feelers. Write up makes it sound all too perfect, just wanted possible feedback from someone who's dealt with one..

nice lookin fish. and btw...love the avatar with the jawfish.

Thanks! I love the Jawfish! He actually pulls snail shells to top off his burrow when he sleeps for privacy, reminds me of a worker going into a sewer drain :wildone:

I feel 100% the same!:smurf:

Also sent out some PMs to people who have talked about them in other areas of RC to get feedback of how they act with the fish they have em with. I would like to add one to the tank, but I'm not looking to learn a lesson the hard way ;)

Appreciate all the feedback and will take it ALL into consideration...

peaceful dottyback? i'd have to see it to believe it.cool looking fish. i'd bet a dinosaur dinner you'd have a problem, sooner than later. your stock list seems nice now. i wouldn't add a thing.

The only fish I'd be worried about is your green clown goby as it might share the same space near a rock or coral that your dottyback might linger around. I don't think it will bother your cardinals at all; I have 2 pajama's. I've noticed that having a big 6-line wrasse seems to make my dottyback more peaceful and stay close to one spot in the tank. My wrasse is a bit aggressive and went after my dotyback for the first few hours. Then I change my rock stack slightly and it tricked the wrasse into thinking he was in a new tank and he became less worried about bothering the dotyback and more worried about establishing his own territory. I also did the same thing with a mandarin. My wrasse wanted to tear it apart. The wrasse was physically attacking the mandarin's head violently. My wife couldn't bear to watch it. I put some big rocks in there and it fixed the situation. I took the rocks out after a week and everyone is happy.
