Last year Leonard Ho wrote an article about research that showed red light negatively effects coral health/growth. Why then, do the major light manufacturers include red LEDs in their fixtures?
Maybe because they disagree with Leonard Ho? It's kind of like global warming... lots of scientists believe in it and a few (or in this case one, don't.
Most people who have studied this before and have published graphs show that the zooxanthellae (algae) that does photosynthesis inside the coral polyp and thus help feed the polyp, use some red spectrum to do that photosynthesis.
Now consider how far red spectrum penetrates water (not very far). And what coral do you do this test on? If you took deep water corals that are not acclimated to withstand red spectrum, maybe Ho's results should be expected. But lots of corals come from shallow water where red spectrum can reach them and they are living creatures that can acclimate, adapt and even evolve over time.
