red rocks reef boca raton

Hey gang,

Have any of you snorkeled at red rocks reef in boca. Headed to Boca in a couple of weeks and wanted to take my son snorkeling for the first time.

Should I go during low or high tide. Have heard opinions leaning in both directions?

Thanks
Tim

hey tim i just left WPB i wanted to go down to red rock let me know how it is i will be heading back down there in a few weeks when are you going to go snorkeling there

It is a fun place for a first time snorkeler. It's where I snorkeled for the first time. It's a man made reef, just a bunch of big rocks piled up. You will see a lot of fish. If you look really close you will see small crabs and stuff like that. There are some barracuda and an occasional big snook. Sgt. Major damsels are everywhere. There are other types of fish I just don't remember. There isn't any coral there. I would go at high tide. The reason I say this is because at low tide the rocks stick out of the water and you are at risk of being thrown into them by the waves. You should still go at low tide at least once though because you get to see stuff that you can't see at high tide crawling around on the rocks and stuff.

Thanks for the info. It looks like we are going to be there during a low tide weekend.
So low tide it is.

Anyone know of any other good spots near there to snorkel?

i would check out ocean reef park in west palm beach on singer island. lots of differnt fish and only about 30 mins away and while you are there check out peanut island it has two snorkeling spots but you need to go 1 hour before high tide and have until one hour after high tide. if you want to beat the madness dont go on sunday you can almost walk to the island over all the boat tied up to each other.

Change of plans, I am going to be at the delray beach marriott. Do any of you know of any decent snorkeling closer to there?

We still plan on swinging down to redrocks, but also wanted to find something a little closer.

Thanks

West palm is closer not by much and i think Jupiter has a nice snorkel park close to shore also ask maxheadroom he has a dive shop in jupiter

Wanted to put input on red reef-
Just got back from snorkeling there from the first time, like stated above it's good for a first time, you'll see lots of fish. Sgt. Majors, barracuda, chubs, grunts, porkfish, parrotfish, and sometimes atlantic blue tangs. It's pretty neat and there's enough entertainment to keep you in the water for an hour or so, i'd recommend going low tide simply because theres just more to see.
