Red Rooster Pygmy Waspfish

I know a few people who have them, they are great little fish. They have good personalities, and will become sort of a little begging dog. Fun? That depends on your definition of "fun". The ones I know of are very loved by their owners.

The person who owns your avatar picture has a few of them and I'm sure he will chime in

Jarrod kinda said it all...very nice little fish (they're on the small side as far as waspfishes go, altho I can't say I'd call them "pygmies"). They're also very easy to sex, so one can easily avoid any male-male aggression.

BTW, their valid binomial name is Paracentropogon rubripinnis, altho DD uses the invalid generic name of Hypodytes. I've also seen them referred to as belonging to genus Apistus, which is also an invalid name. The most commonly used "common" name, for this fish, esp. in "scorp circles" is "redfin waspfish".

It's a neat looking little guy. Another will be up on DD in a few minutes. Just so small.

As far as the avatar it's a great shot, pulled it off google, a beauty.

Thanks! That's the photo on the cover of Frank Marini's Lionfishes and Other Scorpionfishes

Here's the whole photo:

That fish began its life with us as a tiny juvie that lived in a 6 gal cube on our bathroom counter (use the thermometer for scale):

Wasp pair

I have had a pair for going on a year now. I love them. I call them Squigmont and Lavern. But they do have great personalities. Squigmont is my avatar.

Thanks for sharing the history and photos of the lion...it's a beauty. So dang cute at that size and they only get better.

So they change colors/lighten up as they get older? That one on DD today went fast...again. I was dragging my feet because I really want an eel and that little guy looks like eel food to me idk though.

Almost definitely eel food, these guys are small and stay on the substrate

Lil-bit, got any pics of your pair? I'd love to see them

Ah...a TRUE lionfish lover! They may be on the "common" side, but there's nothing like the volitans for sheer presence and graceful beauty.

So they change colors/lighten up as they get older?

Nope...it's more of a mood/habitat thing. They can blend into the rockwork really well. For instance, this is the same fish (a male, BTW):
