red sea coral pro and sps

Hi Guys

anyone have any advice on using this salt for sps..im currently using the aquamedic salt..i hear the coral pro has very high alkalinity..wont this cause problems if I eventually get my nutrients down?

I use this salt and it's really good. First noticeable thing after using this mix was tremendous growth of coraline algae. My dKH stays between 9 and 10. Never lower or higher.

What size tank do you have and how often do you plan to do waterchanges and how much at a time?

In my old small 30gal system I was changing out 5 gal a week and the tank did terrible becasue of how high the alk and cal would jump, I gave most of my 200g bag to a friend with a 72 bow, just a mixed reef, does no dosing and just keeps random zoa/paly/shrooms, duncans, frogspawn and the like and his tank does great on it. And I swapped back to the normal Red Sea on that tank, and now I use NeoMarine on my new system.

Many people have good luck with RSP but just as many have problems with the ALK mixing so high. If you do decide to use RSP then I would make the change very slowly and watch how your livestock adjusts.

If you're worried about the higher alkalinity then why use the pro? The main difference between the two is just that... It's like buying a turkey sandwich and then complaining because you don't like turkey :p Switch to IO or the standard red sea salt...

im from south Africa..unfortunately due to the high dollar rand exchange salt has gone up in price and my local lfs only has the pro in stock at the moment..i have a 350litre four foot tank..do 10% wc twice a month

Used to use coral pro then realized that it was not a good fit as I was running alk at the bottom end of NSW levels due to carbon dosing. Was recommended the regular blue bucket RS salt by another member. It mixes to a alk of around 7.5 and have had a great response by my critters.

I agree that it's a waste if you're planning on running a lower alk level. Otherwise its a great product, but I love the regular salt just as much

They don't have Instant Ocean?

I love the RS regular as it's one of the only salts I get consistent low alk mixes out of which works great with my low nutrient system. The pro was just too high for my tastes and like to hover around 7.8 - 8.0 alk.
