Red Sea Fish and others

Hi all,

Been a while since I've looked at fish and fish prices - wow. Use to buy medium purple tangs (4-5")for $65.00-$75.00 and could by them from people breaking down tanks for even less. There's somebody online selling 2-3" purples for $229.00 . Can I get a WhatWhat?

Is there a something accouting for price increases other than -> 1)exchange rate of the dollar or 2) fuel prices?

Import/Export fees? Regulations? Special taxes?

Just curious.......

Red Sea fish are being exported less mainly because of unrest in middle eastern country's, Saudi Arabia is exporting less fish now for sure and have been for the last few yrs and that's where most come from. Jordan and Yemen also export but not sure how much.

unrest in middle eastern country's

That makes a lot of sense and "unrest" creates a supply/demand issue - > up goes the price :(

I'm not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand it prices "regular folk" out of the hobby but on the other, it strongly encourages wise choice making and responsible husbandry. A $220.00 gamble is nothing to sneeze at...

Very true, look at NYAquatics.com, he had some a wk or two ago for 130$ I think.

when has there not been unrest in the middle east??? i've heard that explantion before but not buying it.

Well Saudi Arabia does the majority of the exporting and they have been in what I will call a civil war for the past 3 yrs now so you can see how that will cause issues. Ship out fish or get in goods like food and water and weapons.... Fish exports aren't a high priority in a country that just sentenced over 800 people in a mass trial to death for being against their government. If that isn't the case then why have the prices of Red Sea fish went up 2-300% more than where they were a few yrs back? High demand, low collection equals high price

Saudi Arabia is in a "civil war"? I could see Egypt, but I didn't know about Saudia Arabia. Having dove the Red Sea, I can attest to the unbelievable fish life. Hope that things stabilize and that prices come down.

Yes sorry not Saudi, taking phone calls and typing isn't my strong suit

i noticed the price increase also. however, the middle east is always a mess, no more or less than ten years ago. iirc, i payed about $150 for a purple tang 2 years ago and $65 about 15 years ago during the Gulf War. Seems about right?

I am dyung to buy a Regal Angel, such a gorgeous fish, but experts say it will survive in capture, if the fish was originally from Red Sea. Impossible to find online or in store((

Our local fish store just got a Purple Tang, 2-3 inches for $65.00 and a 4-5 inch Regal Angel for $125.
That is in Albuquerque. No super high prices here.

I get them at the wholesalers for $65-80. But yes Red Sea fish are getting more expensive and less shipments come in from there as well.

There are a few reasons why i believe
1) there has been some unrest in situations - like another poster said, fish aren't a high priority... Also, it becomes higher to export anything out of a country that is having trouble - everyone wants a piece, and next thing you know the prices just to get it out of the country is 10x the fish costs - most importers wont accept this, therefore wont import..

2) Yemen was a huge exporter of marine fish. in 2011 they revolted (after a previous revolt) and created a huge problem for all exports (and imports)
I believe it has since been "resolved" and they are exporting again, but Dubai has started to export as well which is creating more RS fish to trickle in.

I can get RS from a few different sources, not really sure why others are having a hard time.

I would highly doubt over fishing is an issue. Permits are hard to get creating less exporters and limited divers. Purples are much like yellows in Hawaii - very very common...
