Hydor Koralia 1 here also. A lot depends on what you'll want to keep. If you'll be keeping a lot of soft corals like lps (torch, frogspawn, etc.) and leathers up on top, the #2 may be too much flow. If you'll eventually be keeping SPS the #2 may be better. It may be safer to start with a #1 and upgrade later? Just my own opinion on it.

Thanks Terry and Donna it seems I will be getting a #1. My christmas wrasse just arrived, after my internship work day is over I'll post all the pics. I Also picked up 2 nice black clowns yesterday! You all will see later...

I have a Korilia 2 inside a rock cave in the rear right corner of my RSM where it can't be seen from the front.

For other flow I have the two stock RSM powerheads with a Hydor Flo on one of them. I also have an overflow to a sump in the back skimmer compartment. There is a 350 gph pump in the sump that returns water to the rear right corner of the RSM. With the 2 stock pumps and a 350 gph return pump all pulling water through the grate I have a strong flow through the grate.

I'd go with a 2 and would consider a second korillia as well (i.e., a 2 at the bottom and a 1 near the top).

I dont' think you can really make a "mistake" by putting a #1 in instead of a #2 or the other way around. I also have a deflector on one of the return pumps so that pump does have about 30% less flow. The koralia's are such great pumps and do not blast your corals with water movement. After looking over hundreds of RSM tanks, it is about 50/50, it isn't going to make or break the tank.

I have a lot of SPS at the top and the #2 was a good choice for my tank.

K1 on my RSM I started last week. Not planning any sps in the near future, so the K1 should suffice.
I also just put the deflector on one fo the return pumps. I forgot how much those things decrease the flow.
Need to up my 14g pump if i want to put one in there...

One of the biggest flaws in many tanks is a lack of flow. Think about when diving or snorkeling on a reef how much you get tossed around by the flow. Corals are used to far more flow than many people think.

Flow doesn't cause problems unless it is laminar. The Korilias are very good for producing a non-laminar flow and the Hydor Flo mod reduces the risk of having laminar flow. As long as your fish aren’t pinned against the glass you don’t have too much flow ;)

A big part of pump layout is aesthetics. More, bigger pumps give a better appearance of motion in the tank but the downside is there are more, bigger pumps that can be an eyesore. I think tanks with huge flow, wave action and hidden pumps look more natural and attractive.

excelent point, the ocean is a very flowrific place.

I like the appearance of motion as well, tonight when I post pics you'll have to help me find a spot where I can hide the pump.

Will you also post photos of your new black clowns???? :) Pleez:rollface:

just to confuse things...i have a koralia nano. i wanted it as small as possible to avoid the "eyesore" that Brent F described.

anyway i like the koralia nano. it moves water in different directions and isnt too "obtrusive"

my anthelia whip around like crazy

Anyone else mind jumping in?

Thanks Steve and Brent.

I have a #2 running in my RSM with a few SPS corals and its great for what I need.

hk 1 w/ sps, lps & softies ... yeah the coral police will be after me, but might survive maximum sentencing since I don't have a Tang!

Oh and I swapped one stock ph with a MJ900. Went with the 900 because it isn't that much less flow than the 1200, but the wattage is considerably lower. Thus less heat being generated.

errmm sorry, but as u can see i've already had trouble getting them up here, but if someone wants they can PM me their email address and post the pics full size.

DontXTripNfalll Thanks for sharing your pics. :) Your tank is looking really good. Do you find that your anemones travel around the tank?? Beautiful clowns in the last set of photos. Are you planning on putting 2 different types of clowns in the same tank?
