Don't know if I really want to know the answer to this but...

How long, on a new tank, before you should expect this wonderful pain in the a** called coralline to make it's grand appearance?

Well, I have a 2+ month old 9g nano that already has the back wall pretty well covered. In my RSM it started showing up on the plastic gate & pumps after 1-2 months, and began to really take off I'm guessing at 5-6 months, and started to be a chore to keep off the 3 sides at about 8-10 months. All are estimates and will probably vary by tank depending how much coralline was on your rock to begin with, and how much Ca is in the water, ph, alk, etc. The rock in my 9g came out of the RSM and was covered with coralline - probably why it's grown so fast in that tank.

Circulation pump probs

Hey all,

I'm not sure if you guys have run into this problem yet. I don't have the patience to peruse the 200 pages.

Only one of the circulation pumps works at a time. It's not a particular pump. The right pump seems to be dominant. If I turn off the right one, the left pump turns on full blast. I've switched the pumps as well with similar results.

I've had the tank since April and only encountered this problem last week.

My only other problem is the RSM add-on cooling fan seems to be overheating/shorting my AC adapters. It's fried two so far.

+1 on that Reefmack! I used exisiting liverock from a previous tank as well and i would have to say my schedule exactly mirrors yours
no problems with the 3 sides of glass other than the corners. the kent scraper and the mag float handle the sides well enough...but the corners are really tough to clean!!!

Lost Domain Welcome to RC and the RSM Club! Your pump problem has me stumped. Are you saying whichever one you turn on works, or that only one works, but not both at the same time? It may be a faulty powercenter outlet if only one of the 2 pump switches/outlets works. I'm nit sure that's what your saying or not? It might require contacting Red Sea customer service - if the tank is new & under warranty they'll do what's necessary to correct it at no charge. Have you tried each pump separately on an outside outlet?

lost domain - try unpluggin the pumps and pluggin in something like a lamp or clock radio into the same outlets on the RSM power strip. test to see if two other obects can work at the same time on those outlets. that will help you determine if it is a pump issue or outlet issue.

do you get any micro-bubbles when you turn on both pumps. the RSM is notorious for starving the powerheads when both are on. you have to keep everyhting perfectly clean in the back chambers to avoid it

Reefmack - you will love the Aqua Medic scraper. The handle is only about 6" long but accepts a screw in extension that I have yet been able to find. You can reverse the blade if one side wears out as both sides are sharpened. Be very careful with the blade they are extremely sharp. I am surprised that more people have not purchased this item especially at its price.

Reef: Thanks for the welcome, I have plenty more smaller questions once I figure out the pump issue. Anyway, no matter how I switch the ph's, the one on the left stops pumping water if both ph's are turned on. Both ph's work individually. It seems like an electrical problem.

Snake: Good idea. I'll try it.

I bought the RSM pre-made from the LFS. So I'm not too familiar with the electrical set-up, but I'm sure I can manage.

Incidentally, I've never had micro-bubble problems or skimmer problems. I wouldn't say the skimmer is amazing, but it seems to be doing an adequate job.

I did cut the black cube down within the first week of owning the RSM. I don't remember what made me think to do it.

hey fellow RSmer's. been about 2 wweks of tank cycling and wow does the film build up on the surface!

I recall seeing someone did a mod to the surface skimming grate; however, i cannot seem to locate it. Does anyone have it bookmarked?

Also, i am about to get an MJ1200 to replace one of the return pumps and also get it farther down in the chamber so bubbles don't blow every other day from evaporation. And I don't have to fill the tank to the "almost overflowing" out the top level...

Do any of you only run one of the return pumps? I have a K1 in there and am thinking of supplementing the left side with another K1 or K-nano.

Skimmer is pulling all kinds of gunk. smells just like the gunk from my old 110g skimmer. Yummy!! :D

Also getting red algae film on all sides of the tank, cut hours down to about 5 per day. Can't wait till levels are safe for CUC to go in!

LR coming in Thursday and figure this weekend will be dedicated to the RSM, cleaning, modding, new pump etc...

any advice, pointers, mods, etc are always appreciated!

Thanks!

I figured it out.

The ph's are sucking water out their chamber too quickly for both ph's to operate at the same time.

I took the carbon filter out a few weeks ago. Apparently the carbon displaced enough water to keep the water level higher. Not sure why it makes that much of a difference. I cut the black sponge down to two inches as suggested by many on this thread.

I think I might try LR rubble in the chamber as well to replace the carbon and bio-stones.

Brent - Any idea where to hide a koralia in my tank?

It is easy to hide a Korilia in a cave. Here are some pictures of my RSM a couple days after I set it up. There is a Korilia 2 in the lower right. The first picture shows how it is hidden and the second shows the view looking into the cave.

Here is a picture from 3 months ago. The Korilia is behind the rock on the right with the frogspawn and purple mushrooms on them

Here are other examples. There is a Korilia 1 in the cave in the back of this tank

you should talk to the Information Services Mgr. about getting that opened up:rollface:

snake - Hey - that's my title LOL! But the information I manage is non-IT type stuff. I plan to ask the IT gurus, but I can already hear the answer :(

Thanks for the ideas Brent, but I'm not sure where to place it just yet...

Terry bummer for you, just tell them what your doing and maybe they can unblock it for you?

SO I feed my tank around 9:30 last night and then went in to move some frags of tubs blue and devils armour and a few more since my frag rack has been growing so I dont have space. I forgot to turn the pumps back on and this morning at 7:00 I wake up to see no movement or microbubbles I looked at the temp and it was 77.6 so i was like ok cool.. Noticed a piece of xenia was detached from the mother.. put a small piece of rubble ontop of the stem and placed it in a low flow area... Just wondering if it was really the xenia doing that? Everything is fine now
