hey all. Actually did the dremmel on the surface skimmer and have to say it looks alot like Brent's. LOL It is working very well now and no skum on surface of water.

Also got 30# of LR in from LiveAquaria (DrF&S) and did not expect it to be so large. :( Only got 2 pieces in the shipment.

It should work out ok as I still have about 12# to add from my 14g once ths RSM is done cycling.

Anyways, some "creative" pictures from my wife below. Going to hit LFS this wekend and get a K-nano to replace the PH on the left. Also going to look into getting the MJ1200 for the return pump and necessary plumbing.

Thanks!

thanks ecal! always looking for the "positives" at lease it leaves me pleanty of room to grow and add more LR and Coral!! =)

Just think, those are nice base rocks. When you add some corals and such you might want to consider mounting them on rocks that are a bit smaller.

That will make it easier to frag them or just reposition until you find "just the right spot".

Hey Everyone,
So I am considering drilling my RSM for a sump. How would I drill so that the water level will stay balanced. I am thinking of putting the drain pipe in the back and then having the pump return through the holes of the circulation pumps. Has anyone done this. Any advice would be appreciated. Also is the RSM tempered?

RyanMcLaughlin:

Yes the glass is tempered and I would not recommend drilling the tank.

If anything you should consider using an overflow box, there are a few RSM owners that are currently running sumps.

I am sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

On a sad note I decided to sell my RSM. With a new baby on the way and a 2nd job I am not going to have the time to properly take care of the system. :(

I just want to thank everyone here for all the help over the last year. This has been a great thread and I have received a ton of information.

I will still stop in from time to time to see the interesting Mods that people are coming up with.

I am going to have my Tunze 9002 Nano DOC up for sale sometime over the next couple of days. It's the old bar and clamp design. I have the original box and manual, if anyone is interested send me a PM.

Anyway thanks again :wavehand:

RSMreefer - sad to see you leave us, but I'm sure we all understand. I'm always amazed at the time & effort needed to properly maintain even a tank the size of the RSM, not counting the money a person can pour into it. Best wishes for a happy, healthy baby and Good luck on selling the RSM & equipment. If you want to drop in later & post a "FTS" of the new baby please do so!

RSMreefer Aw, I am sad to see you go, too!! You have helped me, too. Yes, your life is busy right now, and at times it happens that we don't have enough time to give the proper attention to our tanks. I have been there, too. Congratulations on the upcoming arrival or your new baby!! And I think you're pretty special to be working 2 jobs!! 'See you later.

RSMreefer, although I just got my Red Sea Max two weeks ago and wasn't on the nano boards that long, I do appreciate the guidance and helpful information that you gave me. It's people like you that make RC such a great site for enthusiasts of this great hobby that we love. Good luck with your growing family and hopefully you'll come back to this hobby sooner rather than later.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I am going to miss having my RSM that is for sure. It was a tough decision to sell it off but right now family takes priority.

With the money I get for it I plan on getting a nice SLR camera so I can start photographing some memories. Because of this it makes not having the tank a little easier.

I will be lurking around keeping watch on how everyone is doing here from time to time.

Thanks again and keep those RSM's going strong.

ok, enough of the mushy stuff..back to the questions..lol..j/k..
so I'm thinking of replacing the lights since I'm sure they have never been replaced and are over a year old. I have the stock PC's and was wondering where most RSM owners get replacement bulbs? Online or LFS? If online, is there a particular site that has exactly the bulbs needed? Thanks

RSMreefer - when's the baby due? Use that new camera to post us a picture!

Tangwich - you can get the lights from Red Sea Max (seems like they're often out of stock). If you do a Google search on Red Sea Max Parts you'll find a few other places. Here are 2 that I found in a search - be sure they're in stock:

One site

Another site

That's great..thanks Reefmack. Will look into those sites. I wonder if I can just get them at LFS and save myself on shipping. Do you guys recommend that I remove the media under the stock pumps or leave it there? I have heard that some people say they are Nitrate traps, what do you guys think? Have you removed them or left them in?

Reefmack:

My wife's due date is in early January but she is hoping to go early (In December some time) so we can add the extra dependant come tax time.

We will be busy since this will be our third, and two of them will be under 2. :fun5:

I will post a photo for sure when the date comes.

the ceramic media is good for a fish only tank but everybody on here and other sites say that for a reef tank it is a bad idea.

i yanked mine and replaced with live rock rubble. after a while i decided to yank that too for better flow and less detritus build up down in the chamber of death. now it is empty beneath the powerheads in my RSM

i added a marineland c-160 external canister filter and fill it with purigen, chemi-pure elite, phos guard, etc...

Hey RSMreefer, if you have him late December - early January, you will have yourself a little capricorn on your hands and that's a great thing. Ambitious, hard-working and will take care of you and your wife in your old age..great going..ok, ok, so I'm a bit partial to Caps (since I'm one) and in this case not Monti Caps either..lol..

Tangwich:

Some people have replaced the bulbs with standard Power Compact straight pin bulbs. Might be worth looking into.

I'm not sure they are much cheaper though.

I would remove the media. If you have enough live rock in the main tank you should be fine without it. Plus it might increase your flow.

That's great..will look into the straight pin bulbs and remove media, especially since I'll be getting my Stevie T media basket on Wednesday. WOOHOO!
