Bryce,

Here's a refugium I plan on keeping fish in. The sump is 67 gal and the refugium is the sides and back of a 20 gallon tank. I'm either going nocturnal (i.e., some cardinals) or will put a spare 70 watt Viper MH I have on it and keep a clown / anemone pair in the refugium.

Reefmack, Great article about the Lionfish. It's too bad, once tehy are introduced and established there is no way to go back.

It has been a while since I last posted so I'll post some updated photos.
I was wanting to upgrade to a current USA MH/T5 light on top, what would everyone recommend, the 150HQI or the 250HQI, keeping lps & sps?

I received my Tunze Nano Doc 9002 from Reef-Ski a little earlier today it is the older model with the mounting bracket and am trying to figure out how to get it mounted in the skimmer compartment right now.....

OK I got the Tunze in the skimmer compartment. I think I have it in there right so will give it some time and see if it will start skimming...Kind of funny though when I went to take out the RSM skimmer I think it knew it was getting replaced and started working I had about a 1/4 cup full of dark smelly skimmate that I have never been able to get in almost a year of having it.

Chiller suggestions

Chiller suggestions

Hello, guys. Yes, I fell off the earth for a while. My family has kept me busy.

The fish tank is still running. I have a serious problem I need to address though - the temp is getting too hot and I've finally decided it is time to get a chiller. Do any of you have any recommendations? My biggest concerns are that I would like it to go in the cabinet - would this cause the chiller to overheat? I also have a fluval canister filter down there. Also, I would prefer one that isn't too loud, OH, and not too expensive LOL.

What do you guys use and how well do they run?

My temp shot up to 84 yesterday so I stuck some baggies of ice in the overflow. I checked and I did have one fan out. I have that corrected today and the temp is hovering around 81.5 but having the temp spike so high so quick when one fan went out scares me.

Thanks in advance,
Vanessa

Brent Very nice sump/fuge setup for the big tank!

Scooterman - nice pics and the tank is developing well! I run the Current 150W/T5, and it does very well. I can't tell you if the 250W would be better or not. I'm thinking the 250 may be a bit too much for some softies, but that's only a guess.

brycek Keep us posted on how the 9002 does for you. It may take a few days to break in.

Vanessa great to see you in here again! Sorry about the heat issues, but understand your concern. No chiller here so I'm pretty useless on those questions. It seems like a lot run the 1/15 or 1/10 HP, current or JBJ. 84 is higher than most run their tanks, but not disastrous, and I've read reefs can at times get that warm. If you get a chiller be sure it will fit with the cannister in the cabinet. I think some have vented the cabinet with fans to keep the chiller cool, but I'm not sure how many, or if it's really necessary. Chiller owners - jump in with advice for Vanessa!

I finally got the Tunze dialed in per the directions for initial set up getting the foam to rise to the lower edge of the skimmer cup so will give it some more time and see. Now however I have microbubbles all in my tank, When I took out the RSM skimmer my pumps started shooting out bubbles because of the water level drop after removal, so I topped off and now 2+ hours and still having bubbles.

It's common for the bubbles with a new skimmer. Wait & see if it improves. If it keeps up post in the Tunze forum section of Reef Central for some advice.

I am waiting but keeping an eye on it. I already had to adjust the air again on it the collection cup was half full of water in little over an hour.

Well I just ordered a Current USA Outer Orbit 250W Hqi MH/ H.O. T5 set-up! I figured with an open top a fan & the JBJ 1/15th chiller I should be able to manage the temps. I'll also be soon adding an ATO with an Optical sensor to keep water levels smooth. Right now my temp. swings from 78 to 80 with a room temp. of 79 during the day & the hood completely closed. Just leaving the front flap open makes a big difference, figure removing the top completely will do wonders, also I'll locate a fan precisely across the water surface to evap more water daily. I know with 250W's of MH I will have my work cut out for me but I think I can manage it. Reason why I went with the 250 so I can grow anything I want, also I can time it not to run during the heat of the day if necessary. I'll post pics as I improve & hope I can manage the temps.

Softies may go to the bottom or in shaded areas, sorry guys!:mad2:

Hey ReefMack, do you run a chiller or a fan across the water for cooling? If not what temp. do you keep the room?

Scooterman - No chiller here - I just run a dual fan made by Azoo attached to the back rim. Very quiet too. With my 150W on about 8 hours a day and the house kept at about 70, my tank gets a bit below 81 max. I also run an ATO - Tunze Osmolator. But the JBJ ATO is supposed to be good too. Or there are also low cost ATO kits out there.

I'm making a custom ATO using an Optical sensor like the Tunze, only way cheaper! :D

Your house temp. is very cool, mine will be much warmer, I may have to run the mh less!

trapper125 The price doesn't include shipping I ordered an extra u tube with it and the total with shipping was 160.00.

I was so tired last night when I wrote that.....I didn't order the extra siphon u tube. I ordered the rear cover cut out for the prefilter since mine was already broken. Here is the pricing:
Prefilter/Nano $119.00
Red Sea Cover $25.00
Pack/Ship $16.00
Total $160.00

brycek the JBJ ATO is indeed lower priced than the Tunze ATO.

Brent How about that change in the thread starter! I must have been a bad boy? JohnL is on RC staff - I sent him an email asking about it.

brycek Good info. on the Lifereef. I wouldn't need the Red Sea cover as I replaced the hood with a raised one and my back is uncovered now. That would knock a few bucks off the cost.

Hey anyone needing a Red Sea Hood with lights, timer etc, also the skimmer! I'll sell them cheap! LOL

I have a question for anyone with a Remora skimmer, my skimmer skims wet since I've added a larger pump, problem is I need to drain it into a larger container for those times when I'm not here. Has anyone modded a drain for these?
