brycek the JBJ ATO is indeed lower priced than the Tunze ATO.

Brent How about that change in the thread starter! I must have been a bad boy? JohnL is on RC staff - I sent him an email asking about it.

Yea, I might have to change the line below my ID and above the avatar with this change in thread starter ;)

brycek - I have a JBJ and am very happy with it. It is low price compared to the Tunze but expensive compared to a do it yourself ATO.

Hello, guys. Yes, I fell off the earth for a while. My family has kept me busy.

The fish tank is still running. I have a serious problem I need to address though - the temp is getting too hot and I've finally decided it is time to get a chiller. Do any of you have any recommendations? My biggest concerns are that I would like it to go in the cabinet - would this cause the chiller to overheat? I also have a fluval canister filter down there. Also, I would prefer one that isn't too loud, OH, and not too expensive LOL.

What do you guys use and how well do they run?

My temp shot up to 84 yesterday so I stuck some baggies of ice in the overflow. I checked and I did have one fan out. I have that corrected today and the temp is hovering around 81.5 but having the temp spike so high so quick when one fan went out scares me.

Thanks in advance,
Vanessa

Vanessa, as a quick fix until you get a chiller you can leave the front lid open and blow a fan across the surface of the water. You might also need a screen if any of your fish are jumpers.

Evaporative cooling works as good if not beter than a chiller and uses far less energy. The downside is you really need an ATO if doing this since the evaporation is so high.

Scooterman67 I'm running the Remora but no mod to drain the cup. Doesn't raising the cup up high give a dryer skimmate for you? AquaC sells a remora with a drain, but if I remember right it's built in - not an add on. I suppose you could run the cup up high, drill a hole in the side of the cup, get a fitting for it so you could hook a piece of airline tubing on, and then put that in a container. You might want to contact AquaC to see if they might have an after-market mod for it.

Mine doesn't raise up from what I can tell it sits at one level. I brought it used, I was told that it was a newer model but maybe it isn't a pro model. Rather put a Mag 3 on it I found another pump similar, which works well but makes it very wet.

I have a Pic of the side view!

Scooterman67 - Does your cup have a rubber O-ring around it? On mine you just roll that rubber ring up or down to have the cup sit lower or higher. Mine (standard Remora - not Pro & not Nano) came with a MJ-1200 pump, and I can easily go more than a week or two before it has to be emptied. The higher the cup the dryer the skimmate will be.

Sorry - I can't see your pic here at work.

Scooterman - Sounds like you need the O-ring! That's what determines how far down the cup sinks - the O-ring sets the cup level - at least it does on my model. Try contacting AquaC - if you need one soon maybe they could tell you what size O-ring you need. Maybe you could get one at a home center or hardware store if it's not a size made just for AquaC. Here's the AquaC support page:

Maybe even a few large rubber bands twisted together and then wrapped around the cup would serve the same purpose. The O-ring simply grabs the edge of the skimmer & keeps the cup from dropping down all the way.

I have an ATO, just don't have it set-up. I'll put it in the tank again. I never close the front lid, so I'll just have to get a fan to blow over it to help with the cooling.

Since I've fixed the rear fan the temp is staying below 82 degrees. I'll see what happens with the temp after I get the fan on the surface of the water...may not need the chiller after all. If I could just get the temp to stay at 80 I would be happy. Thanks for the great tip!!

As a side note, the high temps did cause stress and I lost a few corals. My "Dorie fish" (blue tang) has already outgrown the tank (6 months!). I could probably keep her in there another 6, but I can tell she needs the swimming room. She has quadrupled in size since I got her. Either I feed too much or the fish store lied about the growth rate LOL

Vanessa As Brent said the fan should help a lot, but you may need to revive that ATO. That's pretty quick growth on the tang. Sorry about the coral loss - what types did you lose?

Scooterman67 - good job! AquaC is another outfit with grrrrrrrrrreat customer service & quick responses to emails I've sent in the past.

Vannessa - if the fan does good enough you could consider doing a mod to add a couple more fans in the lid instead of buying a chiller.

A clip on fan works well and is cheap. Here's one I'm using

trapper125 did a real nice job adding fans to his hood. You could do the same thing leaving out the light fixture:

Hopefully your daughter will understand why the Dorie needs to go back to the LFS to find a bigger home.

My daughter and I made an agreement when Dorie came home with us that she was only at our home temporarily and the tang would eventually go back to the fish store. So, we're good there. I've been preparing her for Dorie leaving for a while. I had no idea tangs grew that fast....as small as she was I honestly thought she would be okay for a year, but she needs more swimming space. She nipped at Goby a few days ago and that was my indicator. She's bored and cramped for space.

I lost my favorite - a bubble - and a torch. The torch I think was unrelated to the water temps, but it may have been more sensitive than I thought. Everything else seems to be doing alright. I have noticed my brain receding and I thought that was due to the heat (water quality is high, so it isn't that) but I noticed three hermit crabs going to town on it. I think that is what is causing the receding. Do hermit crabs eat coral? I feed quite regularly...shoot...given how quick that tang has grown I think I feed too much.

Anyway, I missed you guys. I just pop back in after being gone and you are all so welcoming. It is amazing. What a forum.

Vanessa OK on the bubble & torch. I lost a few heads off on my torch a while back & one survived. No idea why. I had moved some rock around and maybe moving one rock closer had something to do with it, but other than that I don't know why.

Sorry for not asking before, but how is your little angel daughter doing? Well I hope. I used to know her name, but I'll have to admit I can't remember it now.

Thanks, she is good. Her name is Raegan. We have officially made it 11 1/2 months surgery free! Knock on wood. The longest stretch between surgeries has been 16 months. God willing, we'll break our record!! Her health is amazing right now...we have issues, but always will. The big things are going great.

Thanks for asking about her.

Reefmack - Yeah, I still have my RSM, but will be breaking it down in the next week or so. I've been working on a RR 75 gallon tank for the past couple of weeks and finally have all of the plumbing in it done. I'll be moving everything out of the RSM (as well as my other 3 tanks) and into the 75. I just got tired of maintaining multiple tanks and wanted to scale down to one unit. I've got an 8-bulb Tek T5 on the 75, and am running an ADHI Model 30 sump with a Bermuda Aquatics BPS-3C skimmer. I'm kinda glad to move away from the RSM and into a system that has more flexibility and endless options for modification.

BTW, you tanks looks amazing...well done!
