dxtr: Yes, I use stock lighting and as Brent said, it's just fine for what you want to keep. At 8 mths old I need to order replacement bulbs!!! :)

Reefmack: & RhinoCY84: It was Rue's anemone that got pulled through the grate ... twice that I know of!! It split after one of the episodes!

martinphillip03 - good to see you check in! By the time you get that tank you'll know everything there is to know!

Donna - Correct on Rue's anemone! There was one more, before Rue, that had an anemone go through the gate and live, but I just cannot recall who it was. There were even pictures of it posted, and I would have never guessed an anemone could survive based on the mess that was stuck in the gate. Speaking of bulbs I think my bulbs are about 8 months old now. The MH is a bit newer so I'll wait a bit longer. Another expense!

aye Reefmack, the never ending expense of this obsession. LOL And i thought my 14g would be enought for my addiction...oops. hello RSM! =)

OK Knuckleheads!

OK Knuckleheads!

Geesh - I can't even keep up with this hyperactive flurry of posts! It'll take NACL H2O Fish (Kent) a day to catch up! Serves him right for ignoring us in favor of that Quaker Parrot Forum!
Reefmack - Terry.... better watch what you say! I have been "lurking" and reading all the posts from my fellow RSM knuckleheads!!!
Can you believe it??? It wasn't all about the FID today! Here is my latest FTS:

Look Out....

P1010107.jpg

Ooooops! Wrong picture!!! I guess I will have to edit it out???

Meanwhile, back to the fins & gills stuff rather than feathered lizards.... green chickens.... or whatever!
I finally made the trip to a local LFS called 'Exotic Aquatic'. Very impressive place! For Nano tank algae control, Eddie strongly recommended "ALLGONE". Six pouches to add to the rear chamber every couple weeks to control green hair and cyano algae. When I mentioned my Royal Gramma's Ick, he asked if I had treated for flukes! What????? He explained that flukes were a common cause of weakening fish and allowing Ick to develop. Hmmm??? Made sense to me! I purchased "PrazilPro" .... a totally reef safe treatment.

Any thoughts???

Vortech for RSM

Vortech for RSM

Have any one here using Vortech( MP20/40) for RSM tank?
I'm interested to get one but afraid that it will be too strong!

any user here can advice?

NaCl+H2O Fish - Great to see you return to the fold for a brief respite from the green chicken :) It's obvious from the picture though that the green chicken has now taken over your mind, your resistance was futile, and you have been now been assimilated by the quaker parrot Borg! Interesting on the fluke theory. I've seen ads for Algone - let us know how it works, and the PrazilPro. And your next picture of green better be one without feathers - maybe one of the algae in your tank LOL!

dxtr - I went backwards & after getting the RSM also got a 9g reef tank started. Obsession - yes, costly - definitely! I wonder if there's a pill to take to cure this addiction.

jameshongth - I can't recall any RSM owner using a Vortech. I think the idea of having the motor outside the tank, and transferring the power magnetically though thre glass is a real plus. Too costly for me - still $400+ over here. The Vortech is supposedly adjustable from 100-3,000 gph, so the flow could be controlled quite nicely in the RSM. But it's a one-direction flow - that part I don't like - for $400 a person should be able to adjust the direction of the flow, rather than by having to move the powerhead location.

Jameshongth - I believe the Vortech would be too strong. I have the Tunze Nano and it is just a little too strong and I know the Vortech is more powerful. The Tunze beats the Hydro hands down for function and quality.

dxtr - Welcome to the club! I'm also moving up from a Biocube 14 to the RSM. I'm doing it the hard way, however -- I'm starting the RSM from scratch with dry rock -- but it's worth the effort. You can see my thread on Nano-Reefs, topic 158709. Or search for JimDantin

GDESQUIRE - I get confusing information on the Vortech from different sources:

Foster & Smith: "Flow rates are completely controllable between 500 to 3,000 gph; for aquariums from 20-500 gallons..."

Marine Depot: "Operating on tanks between 20 and 500 gallons and producing between 100 and 3,000 gallons per hour of flow..."

Koralia 1: 400gph, Koralia 2: 600 gph

Even at the 500gph that would put the low end of the vortech midway between a Koralia 1 & 2. 500gph in a 20 gallon tank would seem a bit much to me!

But I wonder if running the Vortech at the lowest setting might long term be bad for it.

Nice, but still too pricy IMO, and the lack of being able to adjust the flow direction is a negative to me.

JimDantin - your link takes me to a list of the forums? EDIT - I think I figured it out - Reef Central automatically changes links to most other forums into a link to their list of forums. I'm thinking you tried to link to a thread on the N a n o R e e f forum, or some other? Don't get me started on this topic - grrrr!

Thanks -- I've been trying to figure out how to put the information in a way you could follow it -- search for thread 158709 on that other site or for user JimDantin. I'm really not going to maintain two identical threads! On that site you'll also find a Red Sea Max Index Thread at topic 154957 which links to 20 different RSM owner's threads. It's much easier to follow everyone's progress than on one gigantic thread.

Why can't we all play together in one big sandbox?

Jim - it kind of goes against the spirit of sharing information doesn't it? RC is the only forum I habit that uses such tactics. If it's on N-R I'll find it.

I have a problem. :eek2: I had mentioned that the temperature in my tank has been rising, even though it has not been that hot in the house. This morning the temp is 72.5 in the house and 82.8 in the tank! I've rechecked the temps using other thermometers and it is accurate. Yesterday I shut off the skimmer, went to get a new valve and did the mod that Kent has done. I had left the skimmer off for a few hours and my water temp went down to where it was supposed to be at 78.5. Before bed, I turned the skimmer back on.
I am pretty sure that my skimmer is adding the heat, & that it keeps climbing while it is on. It did this before the mod, too. Has anyone had this happen? Any ideas? The skimmer is now off.

I can’t attest to the stock skimmer pump as I am running a Tunze, but in my experience if you add any kind of pump that is submerged you are going to increase the temp in the tank. By adding my Rio 1100 for my chiller I noticed that my temp increased.

That said a jump from 72.5 to 82.8 seems to be pretty high.

Are you running the stock heater? If so you might want to check to see if it is failing on you.

Donna - it could be the skimmer pump has started generating a lot of extra heat for some reason. Have you tried pulling the skimmer pump to check/clean the impeller? Back when Red Sea first released the tanks I remember something about Red Sea having to release some skimmer pumps that were overheating. you might want to try contacting Red Sea about it. Possibly the pump needs to be replaced?

I suspected the heater at first, and have played with it, too. However, when the skimmer is off, the temp does fall to the setting on the heater. My temps have not fluctuated like this in the last 8 mths, except for the past 3 days.

I also opened the lid, and have a fan running ... just blowing at the tank, not across the open water & in the past 15 minutes the temp has dropped from 82.8 to 82.5 ... so this is telling me it is not the heater. I will take out the skimmer & check the impeller.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Donna - ages ago when I was doing skimmer pump impeller mods, some of them had the skimmer pump getting pretty warm - due to increased friction of the materials I was stitching onto the impeller, and thus putting increased load on the pump to turn the impeller, causing the pump and tank to heat up more. It could be that something is growing in or a piece of something stuck in the impeller chamber. It's a PITA to pull the skimmer up and pull the pump out, but it can be done without totally removing the whole skimmer. Just be sure to shut it off first!

Sweet Tanks! I cannot wait, just got confirmation that my order was shipped today. Less than 24 hours after placing the order. I am impressed.

snake - are those pics with the stock lights or did you upgrage to a Mh fixture as Reefmack did?

yes, i am running stock lighting. I replaced my bulbd after 10 months and i could see a difference in brightness. i highly recommend swapping out bulbs between 8-10 months.

jameshongth- on the powerhead, lots of folks get a koralia 1 or 2 for their RSM. i got a koralia nano becasue i wanted it as small and as "unobtrusive" as possible. i think it does great . my anthelia are right next to it and look like i am aiming a hairdryer at them.

no experience with the vortech so sorry i cant comment. but i love the koralia nano!
