..............By the way my two clowns are in the RSM after 3.5 weeks of QT.

Congratulations! :D

Aaron Peer - Thanks, actually the frag rack which I got from Mag Rack was positioned above where the pumps were blowing and started to grow cyano on it so i moved it to the center front to blow on it. It's only been there for a few weeks but it seems my sps growth has been doing much better with the extra flow considering its farther down from the light... The cage on the right in the pic has frags sitting on top and 2 black clowns inside it... I opened the top one night and the misbar came out right away swimming around and noticed there was a huge nem with a lil clown in it so the black one goes and tries to steal it from the reg one... I watched them show dominence but when biting and grabing occur i put the black in the cage... the full stripe never left the cage ... i thought it would work but it seems they both want the same nem so im getting rid of my nemo... after hosting the nem he started getting a dark orange that i didnt like anyway... I got my RBTA when my tank was 4 months old... its doing great.. okay so thats enough typing for me.

Ok, here we go..first dumb question of the day...I have to go get replacement pc lights as it's time to replace them. Do the stock bulbs have a specific name that I should be looking for or asking for besides pc's for red sea max?

Tangwich - bulbs for a Red Sea Max is what to ask for, since if you want to get a bulb that is a direct replacement - only Red Sea makes them. The T5s in the RSM are of a unique size. Some folks have managed to fit non-RS bulbs in, but I have no recall on what sizes or brands would fit in the RSM. Good luck finding them at a local LFS - if an LFS sells the RSM that would be your best place to go, or call first.

DontXtripNFall - You had some frag pieces on a crate? in front of the return pumps. My first thought was that it could be too much flow, but after reading Brent's post about the flow in the ocean, I realize that it should be fine.

Corals can take a lot of flow but can have their tissue ripped off if the flow is laminar (a sheet of flow with still water around it). The edge between the moving and the still water can kill the corals by tearing the flesh off the skeleton. This is the risk with keeping corals in front of a stationary head.

That's why it is important to mix up the flow by having heads pointing at each other to cause chaotic flow or to use something like a Hydor Flo. Korilias are good for producing a non-laminar flow as well.

Thanks Reefmack, I just got back from LFS and they had JBJ bulbs that fit exactly right with same wattage and t5 style. I guess I lucked out. The tank looks great, can't wait to do my rockwork and start taking pics.

Tangwich - that's great on the JBJ lights fitting. That might help some other folks that can't find the RSM lamps available.

W A R N I N G..... W A R N I N G.... Will Rogers!!!

W A R N I N G Everybody!!!

RSM's are easier than "Green Chickens"!!!

So Everyone, I rescued a "wild Quaker Parrot" from the street in front of my house on May 22nd! :eek1: WHY ME???

It wasn't my intention to become a Quaker Parrot Daddy..... but the bird needed rescue. I had to quickly become a baby Quaker Parrot expert.... Turns out that after DNA feather testing that he is "A BOY"! We have now named him "Dolce" and he is a delight!!! :D

There is a whole bunch of parrot fanatics as well!

We RSM'ers are far MORE SANE than what I refer to as the "Bird Brain Fanatics" :D

First night:

Dolce now :D

So now I was asked to "baby sit" a 4 yr. old female "Jelly Bean" by a neighbor since I have suddenly become an EXPERT on Quaker Parrots!

Here is the "Jelly Bean" :

OY! Give me 10% water change!!! ;)
NaCl+H2O Fish a.k.a. Kent

NaCl+H2O Fish:  Happy to 'see' you again. Great photos & Dolce is handsome ... boy, has he grown up!! Job well done ... that was a beautiful thing you did!!

Tangwich: That's great that you got your bulbs from the LFS. I had mine shipped from Red Sea & they arrived last week.

Today I changed the bulbs & also changed the fans - this is the second set of fans I've replaced in 9 months! Also installed the additional cooling fan in the back ... which I also got with my order last week, as my RSM didn't originally come with one. I did all the work myself, but did get my husband to hold the hood in place while I replaced the pins in the hinges - when I had everything else completed. :D The new fans are quiet once again ... my old ones were sounding like a jet engine taking off for about 3 minutes after the lights came. They'd settle down, but one was running lethargically.

NaCl+H2O Fish - don't stay away so long! You've shared a lot of valuable experience with us in the fairly short time you've been a RSM'er, as well as some nice mods. Dolce's looking great. Now.........the inevitable question - how's the tank doing?

Donna - good to hear you're a hands on person with the tank maintenance. As you already know there are still times when 4 hands are better than 2! Did you see any noticeable difference replacing the bulbs? I remember very well that jet engine noise when the RSM fans aged - it used to scare me!

GDESQUIRE - yep - I got the Aqua Medic scraper Friday, but I won't get to using it till next weekend (trying to give the wife a break by not spending all weekend on tank related things LOL). It looks like it will do a much better job than the Kent SS scraper - the handle is big and easy to grip, and the blade is much longer and razor sharp. Those things, plus being able to change the angle on the blade are real improvements. I'll post on it next weekend when I get to try it out.

What is the exact name of the scraper? Aqua Medic scraper? I use a razor manualy but want to get to some hard to reach areas.

Finally set up my Tunze 9002 after getting the replacement part to fix it. Does anyone have problems where it foams up waaaaay to much? When I checked it this morning the collection cup was overflowed with water and spilling out. The water level is exactly where the line indicator is. What should I do?

Nevermind...read the manual and closed the screw until the foam reached the base of the cup. Ahh things are different when you have a skimmer that actually skims? hehe :D well hopefully it'll skim ;)

Remember ME???

Remember ME???

Hello Everyone....
Wanted your opinions.......?
My RSM is doing well... almost self sufficient. Hmmm?
Current residents are:
A FAT PIG Ocellaris "Nemo" Clown
A GROWING LARGER Monthly spotted Cardinal Fish
A Royal Gramma that is managing to fight off Ick and is active and eating well...
A Peppermint Shrimp, Flame/Fire Shrimp and Cleaner Shrimp
4 - Mexican Turbo Snails, 4 - Nassarius Snails and 4 - Cerith Snails
Red Serpent Starfish, Feather Duster worms, EXPANDING soft yellow polyp colony, small zoa frag, baby blue Bubble Coral and a mixed mushroom / dragon eye zoa frag..... I also have lots of "other stuff" that has kind of showed up! Got to be a good thing for a 6 month old RSM. Thinking that suggests a healthy tank....

OK.... Here are some pictures....
First... Yellow Polyps from mid April.

Here they are now: 1) front to back and 2) from above.

P1010147.jpg

My question is that the Yellow Polyps are doing VERY WELL and are getting larger and expanding. A few have established another colony an inch in front of the main colony. If I want to establish some more "baby colonies".... would I move the main colony to another spot to allow more babies OR frag the main rock????

Apologies for brown diatom on the glass but I am always amused when the Red Serpent Starfish, Cleaner Shrimp and in the LR, the Flame Shrimp scamper out for the New Life "Spectrum Thera+A" pellets. It's also my way of checking on my 4 - Nassarius Snails because they pop up to eat. :D

Kent a.k.a. NaCl+H2O Fish

NaCl+H2O Fish Kent - you really are back! The yellow polyps look great and have really multiplied! The bubble coral looks so much better than when you picked it up, and it looks like the zoas have multiplied as well. I don't know what to tell you on the yellow polyps. I've seen some folks place small rocks next to a colony and wait for the small rock to be populated, then they move, sell, or trade the small colony. I'd worry more about them spreading and taking over the whole tank! But, that might be quite pretty with everything covered in yellow! Good to hear the critters & fish are doing well, and that the gramma is still acting healthy. Thanks for the posting the update & pictures for us! :)

Good to see Titans again too!

Thank You My Friend!

Thank You My Friend!

Reefmack -
You "mentored me" onto this thread and with my new RSM so I really appreciate your kind words.... :D

Hmmm??? Use base rock pieces to propagate new yellow polyp colonies??? Maybe I can make some trades??? Looking for a "Pulsing Xenia" next....
I understand that they can ALSO GROW like weeds!
