Red Sea Reefer 170 build thread

Only one casualty - the peppermint shrimp was DOA. :( Everything else survived, and then some oh man!

More pics coming shortly!

Here all of the rockscaping is done. I managed to cram it all in there, make areas for coral and other goodies, as well as put my two clowns into the display tank!

I have one LPS favia I picked up and placed on the rock. Pincushion urchin friend!

This was an incredible experience. Thanks so much to Rich at Tampa Bay Saltwater. I will be using him again for my 180g in the future. This is the only way to start a tank! So much life, so many cool creatures and things. And such wonderful colors!

I'll be having my wife do some pro shots soon with her DSLR.

Larger FTS.

Also looks like about 3/4 of the snails died. :( Most of them haven't moved in the 3 hours I put them into the tank. I'll have to get more.

Some crazy stuff as I was putting rock in the tank. One rock had a HUGE porcelain crab the size of my palm on it. I didn't see it and it jumped off the rock and into the water as I was about to put the rock in. It scared me! lol. And 2 seconds later, his friend the pistol shrimp jumped off too. I'm sure there are several more pistol shrimp in the tank now. And it was pretty hilarious at first as the new ones joined the old ones. It sounds like a gang fight breaking out haha.

Snails do that after shipping...they will be crawling by tomorrow...cukes do that also......patience ...lol....

So, you're saying they are lazy bums? :D The cukes are already crawling around all over, working through the sand! Sorry I am a patient person, I just forgot that snails can go dormant during shipping.

My wife fully approves. She said this tank far exceeds the previous tanks I've done. She said it was money well spent and she loves the tank. Wifey stamp of approval = all good things. :bounce1:

LOL....usually the cukes are the lazy ones....turn the snails upright...gives them a head start!

You did a really good job with that tank, grasshopper!

The blue leg hermits are going crazy on the algae that had been growing. They are awesome! They cleared up almost half of a rock already haha!

Btw the reddish looking think with tentacles you weren't sure what it was looks like a flame scallop

Thanks! I see that it is recommended to feed them. Looks like I should get some reef chili or reef roids for it. I know they tend to have a shorter life expectancy in captivity as well but I'll enjoy him while he's here.

Are you sure? He was ripping the polyps out with his claws and then putting them into his mouth.

Yup...he uses his mouth to apply the glue...then sticks them on his back...gorgs are like weeds....you will be fragging it soon...consider the coolness factor of a natural propagator in your tank...he will also do the same with sponges...natures natural camo! See the tunicates growing on him already...is how they got there... Feed your tank some raw shrimp...everything likes that...

Ah ok that makes sense then why he was putting them to his mnouth. What kind of crab is it anyways, it's crazy looking!

Also, the pistols are going wild at each other - my tank sometimes sounds like Chicago on a friday night :blown:

He is a grown up version of the other decorator crab you have...they morph ...like a caterpillar...

The pistols are like 1/4 inch big...you will never see them....
