Redspot Cardinalfish - Apogon parvulus

Nexdog, do you regularly see these parvulus available there in Japan? I remember seeing these years gao for the first time in Japanese systems...
 
Yah, Vessel carries them quite often but that's the only online retailer that I've seen. Never seen them at the prestigous B-Box or any local LFS. Personally I find them interesting but they look a little too freshwater for my taste. :)

I have 2 of 5 remaing redspots from my DD order placed on 1/28. I believe that one of them is carrying a mouthful of eggs, although I am not 100% certain. The other fish has quite severly nipped his tail over the last few days, which started after I first suspected he was carrying eggs. Is this common? Also, how long do they usually carry?

The cardinalfishes have spawned several times now, but unfortunately all of our attempts to gently capture the carrying male have failed with the fish spitting out the egg mass.

It's incredible to see how many eggs are present in clutch (I would estimate over 50), as the eggs themselves are tiny and appear to be less than 1mm each.

Kevin, I just ordered a set of 5 from you guys. They will be going in my 238g SPS dominant reef. There are a number of large fish, but none that are really aggressive (except towards conspecifics). Mine arrive tomorrow, I'll report back here as to how mine do.

I think threads like this are a fantastic way to build up a database of experience with new fish. That way, if something happens and they don't make it, it was not all for naught, as others can learn from the experience.
 
basser -- sorry didn't get your question till now. Yes, they were eating, but the one with the ragged tail had stopped for a couple of days before the pics were taken. He died (disappeared) the day after my post. The following day the sole survivor had a big chunk out of his tail, and disappeared the next day as well. I suspect that the whipfin wrasse or possibly the CB shrimp were to blame. I never saw any fish go after them so I am leaning toward the shrimp, i have seen him act aggresively toward fish. I am extremely dissapointed that I lost them, I had waited a few years to find them. If I catch the wrasse/shrimp I will try them again, maybe in a larger group if I can manage to be quick enough at DD. I hope they are planning to keep stocking them, they seem to be available frequently now.
 
My quintet from DD arrived today, and so far, so good. All five are out and about and schooling, and all are eating. All their new tankmates are pretty much ignoring them (although they definitely huddle together when the 1 ft. mata tang swims by :) ).
 
They hang out in the back, with about 2.5' of water to shoot through, so tough to photo...but here they are. So far I've seen them eat my frozen mix, and freeze dried cyclopeeze. I see how these could be tough to feed...they are TINY (my friends who were over last night asked when I added the minnows), and require a very small food size.

I need advice on tankmates for these redspot cardinal. I just added 12 about 2 weeks ago in my 75g....10 are doing well so far. 1 death is caused by my melanarus wrasse, which I removed right away, the other 1 is just not eating & skinny so it finally died....
I saw my melanarus ate my redspot cardinal :(, so I want to add fish that will not harrass and eat the cardinal...
I'm thinking of adding Royal Gramma & Copperband Butterfly....will these be good tankmates for the redspot?
 
very nice fish~ and I also have plan to keep them.

They like floating food for example flake or pellet food?
 
They're on a diet of NLS small fish pellets as well as otohime S1/S2 pellets, fed by dual Eheim feeders 8x a day. They're currently eating anything that hits the water (Rod's Reef, nutramar ova, frozen rotifers, etc.).

The auto feeders with pellets just makes it more convenient since they can be fed throughout the day when I'm not at home.
 
Here an update from our A. parvulus:
In februari we bought 25 of them, at the moment 22 of them are still alive and eating all kinds of food we offer them.
 
I got 10 from DD in April. Had one DAA within hours and the rest are still alive and eating frozen mysis (mixed with Selcon and Zoa Marine) and Hikari freeze dried artemia. They don't eat pellets. Today just found one of them holding eggs. I feed them at least twice a day. They were the first fish to go in the tank.
